Since the 2009 YouTube web series Marble Hornets brought the internet phenomenon Slenderman to life, movies and series about creepypastas have become immensely popular. This trend continues with “Elevator Game,” a 2023 horror film based on the urban legend of the same name, which is currently trending worldwide on Prime Video.
Although the myth has recently gained significant recognition on TikTok, it actually dates back many years and is one of the earliest creepypastas to gain traction online. The rise of social media platforms has provided more opportunities for people to film themselves participating in the trend, leading to the misconception that it originated there.
The film was directed by Rebekah McKendry, a prominent figure in horror movie journalism in the United States. She was a key contributor at Fangoria until 2015 and currently works as a podcaster for Blumhouse.
‘Elevator Game’ occupies the Top 7 on Prime Video worldwide
Films about horror trends are becoming immensely popular, gaining massive viewership both in theaters and on streaming platforms. This is evident from the success of “Elevator Game,” which is currently the seventh most-watched movie on Prime Video worldwide.
It has already surpassed Aaron Eckhart’s “The Bricklayer,” a top action film in the catalog. Currently, the adaptation of the creepypasta is in a close race for the sixth spot, which is held by another action film, “Black Lotus.”
The story follows Ryan, an intern with a team of streamers—Chloe, Kris, Matty, Izzy, and Kevin—who investigate paranormal legends. On his first day, Ryan suggests they explore a local building where a young girl named Becki allegedly disappeared after playing the “elevator game.” He conceals the fact that Becki is his sister and that he joined the group to uncover the truth about her disappearance.
The cast includes Gino Anania, Megan Best, Alec Carlos, Nazariy Demkowicz, Samantha Halas, Madison MacIsaac, Verity Marks, and Liam Stewart-Kanigan.
“Elevator Game” shuts down with a very open ending, suggesting the possibility of a sequel if it continues to perform well on streaming. We will keep you updated on any developments.
