The story itself is based on the video game series published by Sega, but the spin-off is strictly connected to the 2022 movie, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Therefore, it is part of the live-action franchise that originated in 2020.

How was the Knuckles character created?

Knuckles the Echidna, a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series, was introduced by Sega and first appeared in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. The character was designed by artist Takashi Yuda.

Knuckles was created to add a new dynamic to the Sonic series. Unlike Sonic, he possesses unique abilities, such as gliding and climbing walls, thanks to his spiked knuckles and powerful red echidna physiology. He is also the guardian of the Master Emerald, a powerful gemstone that plays a significant role in the Sonic storyline.

Regarding the game’s narrative, Knuckles starts as an antagonist, misled by the main villain, Dr. Robotnik (or Eggman), who makes him believe that Sonic is a threat to the Master Emerald. Over time, he discovers the truth and becomes one of Sonic’s allies.

The character’s popularity grew over time, leading to his inclusion in various Sonic games, spin-off titles, animated TV series, and comics. His character has become an integral part of the Sonic franchise, contributing to the diverse gallery of characters within the Sonic universe.
