It clearly won’t be a quiet year for “Minecraft” fans. Following the production of a movie featuring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, and Emma Myers, set to premiere on April 3, Mojang Studios has just revealed that a series is also in the works, co-produced with Netflix.
The announcement was made half an hour ago on Netflix’s YouTube channel, which uploaded a teaser featuring a creeper and the Netflix logo in “Minecraft” style. This news comes as part of the celebrations for the game’s 15th anniversary.
While no specific release date, plot details, or cast information have been revealed yet, the entertainment company teased whether the production will be interactive or not. Check out all the details here.
Will the Netflix ‘Minecraft’ series be playable?
According to the producers, the series “will feature an original story with new characters, showing the world of Minecraft in a new light.” Although nothing is confirmed, this suggests it will likely be a traditional fiction show, without user interaction.
However, nothing is impossible. Netflix has already had success with interactive series and may want to expand its catalog further. The most notable example is “Minecraft: Story Mode”, which reached two seasons before its developer, Telltale Games, closed in 2018.
If the upcoming series were to be interactive, it might follow a similar format to Telltale’s canceled production: an episodic point-and-click graphic adventure. In this format, the objective would be to collect items, solve puzzles, and interact with non-player characters, allowing users to make decisions that influence the show’ events and outcomes, leading to multiple possible endings.
If you’re unsure whether you would enjoy this interactive binge-watching experience, you can try other Netflix titles in this style. The best-rated ones include “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” and “Escape the Undertaker.”
