“The Darkest Minds” is an adaptation of a popular young adult book series and falls into the science fiction genre, similar to other works like The Hunger Games and Divergent. This week, it has become the Top 8 on Netflix.
The fantasy romance drama had its big debut in 2018 and starred four main stars (which include Skylan Brooks and Miya Cech) but the standout performances came from Amandla Stenberg as Ruby and Harris Dickinson as Liam.
The film directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson received mixed reviews. Some praised its action and the performances of the young actors, while others found it less impactful compared to other dystopian novel adaptations.
The Darkest Minds ranked No. 8 movie on Netflix worldwide
Although “The Darkest Minds” was released seven years ago, it remains a classic in the genre, despite not having received a sequel. This week, it has become one of the most-watched movies on Netflix worldwide.
Flix Patrol reported that the fantasy drama for young adults achieved the Top 8 in the ranking of the most popular titles of the week on the streaming platform’s catalog, surpassing “White House Down” and “Ferdinand”.
The narrative explores how teenagers cope with their abilities and the loss of their childhood. It reflects the struggle of young people to find their place in a world that oppresses and seeks to control their powers.
Some characters develop how power can be both a blessing and a burden and how they learn to manage it. The same applies to the novel on which it is based, written by Alexandra Bracken, which has three volumes.
What is The Darkest Minds about?
The story is set in the near future where an epidemic has killed 98% of the children in the United States. The survivors develop psychic abilities that the governments see as a threat.
The children are imprisoned in concentration camps and labeled based on their level of danger. Ruby Daly is one of the few survivors with telekinetic and telepathic abilities.
She escapes from a concentration camp and joins a group of teenagers with similar abilities. Together, they seek refuge and a safe place while fighting against government forces and their own fears.
