According to IMDb trivia, the sequence that became the centerpiece of the film’s marketing campaign relied almost entirely on miniature models, carefully planned pyrotechnics, and high speed photography instead of digital effects. Three decades later, it remains one of the defining practical effects achievements of the 1990s.

<h2>How the Filmmakers Destroyed the White House Before CGI Took Over</h2>

Although “Independence Day” featured groundbreaking visual effects for its time, director Roland Emmerich and his team chose a practical approach for what would become the movie’s signature shot. Rather than creating the White House digitally, the effects department built a detailed miniature at one twelfth of its actual size specifically for the destruction sequence. The model also appeared briefly in an earlier scene when David and Julius Levinson stop outside the presidential residence before its dramatic fate.

Blowing up the miniature required far more planning than simply setting off explosives. The crew spent an entire week preparing the sequence and carefully positioned explosive charges throughout the model to achieve the desired effect. To capture every detail, nine cameras filmed the explosion simultaneously, each operating at different speeds to provide multiple perspectives of the blast.

One camera proved especially important to the final result. It recorded the explosion at twelve times the normal frame rate, allowing the footage to be played back at regular speed. That technique made the fireball appear heavier, slower, and dramatically larger than it would have looked in real time, giving the destruction its unforgettable sense of scale.

The finished shot quickly became the defining image of “Independence Day.” It appeared prominently in teasers, trailers, television commercials, and even on the cover of many VHS editions, helping establish the film as one of the biggest event movies of 1996.

Interestingly, the White House interior sets seen elsewhere in the movie were not built from scratch. They had previously been constructed for “The American President” and were later reused in productions including “Mars Attacks!” and “Nixon.”

According to IMDb trivia, the film’s journey to the big screen included unexpected casting choices, improvised moments, remarkable practical effects, and surprising incidents that even many longtime fans may have never heard about. Here are 10 of the most fascinating behind the scenes stories.

<h2>1. Bill Pullman Secretly Watched the Movie With Fans on Opening Weekend</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1280" height="720" data-id="97138" src="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2026/07/04140154/Bill-3-1280x720.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-97138"><figcaption>Source: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images for Tribeca Film Festival</figcaption></figure>

After “Independence Day” arrived in theaters, Bill Pullman, director Roland Emmerich, and producer Dean Devlin decided to experience the film from a different perspective. The trio quietly slipped into Grauman’s Chinese Theatre without drawing attention to themselves, blending in with the audience.

Pullman later recalled that watching moviegoers react to the action, humor, and emotional moments felt “like watching fireworks.” It gave the filmmakers a rare chance to witness firsthand how their blockbuster connected with audiences.

<h2>2. Kevin Spacey Was Originally Supposed to Play the President</h2>

Before Bill Pullman delivered one of the most memorable presidential speeches in movie history, another actor had been in line for the role. Dean Devlin originally wrote President Thomas Whitmore with Kevin Spacey in mind, having known him since high school.

According to production stories, a Fox executive rejected the idea because he did not believe Spacey had the potential to become a major star. The character was subsequently rewritten before Pullman stepped into the part that became one of the film’s defining performances.

<h2>3. Eddie Murphy Was the Backup Plan for Will Smith</h2>

Although Will Smith was always Roland Emmerich’s preferred choice to play Captain Steven Hiller, his casting was far from guaranteed. Producer Dean Devlin later admitted he expected Eddie Murphy to land the role because of his enormous box office appeal.

Studio executives also explored several other possibilities, including Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and William Baldwin. Smith ultimately won the part and helped turn “Independence Day” into the biggest hit of his career at the time.

<h2>4. The Movie Almost Had a Completely Different Name</h2>

It’s difficult to imagine the film being called anything other than “Independence Day,” but that almost happened. Bill Pullman later revealed that the studio originally favored the title “Doomsday” before eventually securing the rights to the now iconic name. The change proved especially fitting given the movie’s July 3 release and its close connection to the Fourth of July holiday.

<h2>5. Matthew Broderick Nearly Played Jeff Goldblum’s Character</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1280" height="720" data-id="97139" src="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2026/07/04140308/Inde8-1-1280x720.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-97139"><figcaption>Source: Roy Rochlin/Getty Images</figcaption></figure>

Jeff Goldblum’s performance as David Levinson became one of the film’s highlights, but another familiar face almost played the role. Matthew Broderick received the offer first but had to decline because of scheduling conflicts.

Although he missed out on the alien invasion epic, his relationship with Roland Emmerich continued. Just two years later, the director cast Broderick as the lead in “Godzilla.”

<h2>6. Spain’s Marketing Campaign Fooled Thousands of Viewers</h2>

The promotional campaign for “Independence Day” took a remarkably creative approach in Spain. Television broadcasts interrupted regular programming with realistic news reports describing enormous alien spacecraft appearing over major American cities, echoing Orson Welles’ famous “War of the Worlds” broadcast.

While a small disclaimer identified the segments as advertising, many viewers overlooked it and believed the reports were genuine. The campaign reportedly prompted numerous calls to authorities from concerned members of the public.

<h2>7. Bill Pullman Drew Inspiration From Robert F. Kennedy</h2>

One of cinema’s most celebrated inspirational speeches did not emerge by accident. While preparing President Whitmore’s address before the final battle, Bill Pullman looked to Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s remarks following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Producer Dean Devlin later remembered the cast and crew being stunned during Pullman’s first rehearsal, saying nobody expected the performance to be so powerful. The speech has since become one of the movie’s most enduring moments.

<h2>8. Will Smith and Bill Pullman Went Through Military Style Training</h2>

To make their fighter pilot performances feel authentic, the two leading actors underwent an unusual form of preparation. Will Smith and Bill Pullman completed Air Force basic training exercises before production began, then spent an entire day inside a decommissioned F-16 fighter jet.

During the exercise, Air Force recruits shook the aircraft from the outside to simulate the physical conditions experienced during flight. The experience helped both actors better understand what military pilots endure.

<h2>9. Matthew Perry Was Almost Part of the Cast</h2>

Another recognizable television star nearly joined the film before production got underway. Matthew Perry was originally cast as Captain Jimmy “Raven” Wilder but withdrew shortly before filming began.

Even so, the Perry family still ended up being represented in the finished movie because his father, actor John Bennett Perry, appears as a Secret Service agent.

<h2>10. The Movie’s Hype Almost Made the Composer’s Job Harder</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped">

Composing the music for a blockbuster is never an easy assignment, but David Arnold faced an unusual challenge while working on “Independence Day.” Hoping to shut out distractions, he isolated himself in a Los Angeles hotel room for nearly four months so he could focus entirely on writing the score.

Ironically, the film’s massive marketing campaign kept finding its way into his daily routine, as helicopters repeatedly flew past his window carrying giant promotional banners. Instead of escaping the growing excitement surrounding the movie, Arnold later admitted the constant reminders only added to the pressure he felt to deliver a memorable soundtrack.

More than three decades after its release, “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” remains a benchmark for action cinema thanks to its groundbreaking visual effects, relentless pacing, and one of the most memorable antagonists ever put on screen. Much of that eerie presence came not from computer effects alone, but from Robert Patrick‘s meticulous preparation before cameras even started rolling.

<h2>Robert Patrick Trained Himself to Run Like a Machine</h2>

When James Cameron cast Robert Patrick as the liquid metal assassin, the actor approached the role with an unusual goal. Rather than simply looking intimidating, he wanted every movement to suggest that the T-1000 was a machine disguised as a man. According to IMDb trivia, Patrick even feared showing signs of fatigue, so he trained himself to sprint while breathing exclusively through his nose, allowing him to appear effortless no matter how fast he ran.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1280" height="720" data-id="97098" src="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2026/07/03120128/Terminator-7-1280x720.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-97098"><figcaption>Source: IMDb</figcaption></figure>
</figure>

That preparation paid off during the film’s famous canal chase. Patrick became so fast that he could actually catch up to Edward Furlong as the young actor rode a dirt bike, forcing him to slow down so the sequence would work for the camera. The result helped create the illusion of an unstoppable machine that never seemed to tire.

His transformation went well beyond running. Patrick underwent extensive firearms training so he could reload and fire weapons with remarkable speed while teaching himself not to blink during gunfire. Keeping his eyes locked on a target without flinching gave the T-1000 an unsettling calm that separated him from traditional action movie villains.

To complete the performance, Patrick studied the movements of predators, drawing inspiration from animals such as sharks and bald eagles to refine the character’s controlled posture and piercing stare. Combined with intense conditioning and martial arts training, those carefully developed habits helped turn the T-1000 into one of the defining cinematic villains of the modern blockbuster era. As the film celebrates its 35th anniversary, that physical performance remains just as memorable as its revolutionary visual effects.

One of its most important behind-the-scenes decisions had little to do with the script itself. Instead, it centered on casting Leslie Nielsen in a role that would permanently reshape the course of his career and change how audiences saw him forever.

<h2>How Airplane! Turned Leslie Nielsen Into a Comedy Legend</h2>

Before stepping aboard “Airplane!,” Nielsen had spent roughly three decades building a reputation as a dependable dramatic actor. He had appeared in science fiction, thrillers, and disaster films, becoming known for playing authoritative, straight-faced characters. Although the star privately hoped for the chance to tackle comedy, those opportunities rarely came. According to IMDb trivia, he even admitted he feared he was getting too old for anything but “elderly grandfather” roles.

The filmmakers saw something others had overlooked. While the studio reportedly preferred comedian Dom DeLuise for the part of Dr. Rumack, directors Jerry Zucker, David Zucker, and Jim Abrahams insisted on casting Nielsen instead. Their philosophy extended throughout the picture, as they deliberately filled the cast with actors recognized for serious performances, believing that delivering absurd dialogue with complete sincerity would make the comedy even stronger.

The gamble paid off immediately. Nielsen’s completely deadpan portrayal of Dr. Rumack became one of the film’s standout performances, helping “Airplane!” earn widespread acclaim and impressive box office success. Released in 1980, the parody of disaster movies grossed more than $170 million worldwide and has since been recognized as one of the greatest comedy titles ever made, with its influence still visible in countless movies and television shows decades later.

For Nielsen, the impact extended far beyond a single hit. His performance in “Airplane!” opened the door to a new chapter that included “Police Squad!,” where he introduced Detective Frank Drebin, and later “The Naked Gun” trilogy, which cemented him as one of Hollywood’s defining comedic actors.

According to Screen Rant, citing an interview Cregger gave to Empire magazine (via GamesRadar+), the filmmaker has explained why the franchise’s most recognizable protagonists were deliberately left out of his version of the survival horror saga, arguing that the decision was driven by the story rather than fan service.

<h2>Why Zach Cregger Left Resident Evil’s Most Famous Heroes Out</h2>

Ever since Zach Cregger was announced as the director of the “Resident Evil” reboot, one of the biggest questions surrounding the project has been why it would avoid the characters most closely associated with Capcom’s games. Instead of centering on Leon, Jill, or Claire, the film introduces Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, whose ordinary job spirals into chaos during the Raccoon City outbreak.

Speaking about that creative choice, Cregger said forcing iconic characters into the narrative simply did not fit the picture he wanted to make. “To try and shoehorn in any of those characters would feel inorganic to this self-contained story. I have to put the story first and foremost.”

The director also described Bryan as a very different kind of lead than longtime fans might expect. “The concept here is that we’re following an i**ot,” Cregger said before clarifying, “Not that he’s st**id, but he’s not your typical game character.” Rather than an experienced police officer or elite operative, the protagonist is an everyday person caught in extraordinary circumstances.

That approach matches what Cregger has previously shared about the reboot. Set during an alternate version of the events of “Resident Evil 2” in a modern-day timeline, the film tells a parallel story unfolding alongside the infamous Raccoon City disaster. Instead of revisiting familiar character arcs, it explores how someone outside the established mythology survives the same nightmare.

The reboot marks the second attempt to relaunch the live-action “Resident Evil” franchise following 2021’s “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.” Co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, the picture also stars Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson, and Paul Walter Hauser. The title is currently set to hit theaters, including IMAX, on September 18.

According to Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios, United Artists, and Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment have secured the rights to adapt “The Mandela Catalogue,” one of YouTube’s most successful horror franchises, following a competitive bidding war involving 11 studios. The feature film will be directed by series creator Alex Kister, who co-wrote the screenplay with Tyler Clifton.

<h2>What Is ‘The Mandela Catalogue’ and Why Is Hollywood Interested?</h2>

First released on YouTube in 2021, “The Mandela Catalogue” quickly became one of the defining works of the analog horror genre, attracting more than 100 million views across its official episodes. Created by Alex Kister, the series built a passionate fanbase through its unsettling VHS-inspired aesthetic, cryptic storytelling, and the countless reaction and theory videos it inspired online.

Set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, the story follows a world infiltrated by terrifying entities known as Alternates. These shape-shifting beings psychologically manipulate their victims before taking their identities, creating an atmosphere of paranoia that unfolds through found footage, emergency broadcasts, surveillance recordings, and corrupted media.

News of the film adaptation follow a growing trend of Hollywood investing in horror properties that first found success on YouTube. After the breakout performances of “Backrooms” and “Obsession,” studios have increasingly looked to online creators and digital-first franchises as potential theatrical hits. The intense competition to secure “The Mandela Catalogue” suggests the industry believes the series could become the next major crossover success for internet-born horror.

In a recent interview promoting the film, shared by Almanaque Disney on X, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that conversations about “Moana 3” have already begun while also revealing who is expected to lead the screenplay for the next installment.

<h2>Dwayne Johnson Says ‘Moana 3’ Is Already on Disney’s Radar</h2>

With the live-action “Moana” set to premiere on July 10, Johnson offered fans an unexpected glimpse at what could come next. Asked whether a third film is in the works, the actor did not leave much room for speculation. “The answer is yes. We have talked about Moana 3. But first, the live-action Moana,” he said, making it clear that Disney’s immediate focus remains on introducing a new version of the story to audiences.

Johnson also confirmed that the creative partnership behind the upcoming remake is expected to continue into the series’ next chapter. “We have the amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. They will pen Moana 3,” he revealed.

That announcement carries extra weight given the duo’s history with the franchise. Bush, now Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, wrote the original “Moana”, co-wrote “Moana 2,” and previously worked on acclaimed Disney hits including “Zootopia” and “Encanto.” Ledoux Miller, a Samoan-American filmmaker, made her feature directorial debut with “Moana 2” after building a television career on projects such as “Thai Cave Rescue.” Together, they have become two of the key creative voices shaping the series.

Before any sequel moves forward, however, Disney is preparing to launch the franchise’s first live-action feature. Directed by Thomas Kail, the adaptation stars newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, while Johnson reprises his role as the shapeshifting demigod Maui. The film revisits the 2016 animated adventure as Moana leaves her island home and sets sail alongside Maui on a journey to restore balance to her people.

And if that wasn’t enough to get your heart rate up, the studio has attached none other than It Ends With Us author and romance powerhouse Colleen Hoover to produce the adaptation under her Heartbones Entertainment banner alongside partner Lauren Levine.

<h3>The Blueprint: Fake Dating and Academic Feuds</h3>

For those who haven’t yet devoured the 2023 novel, Love, Theoretically is a delightfully chaotic STEM romance. The story follows Elsie Hannaway, a weary adjunct theoretical physicist who supplements her abysmal teaching salary by working as a fake girlfriend for hire.

Her carefully compartmentalized lives collide when she meets Jack Smith, a notoriously cold, devastatingly handsome experimental physicist who happens to be the older brother of her favorite client. To make matters worse, Jack is the exact man who once ruined her mentor’s academic career—and he sits on the hiring committee for her dream job at MIT. Cue the academic warfare, hidden identities, and inevitable, sizzling chemistry.

To bring this witty script to life, Amazon has hired Sofia Alvarez, the filmmaker who beautifully adapted Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You for Netflix. Alvarez is set to direct and pen the screenplay.

A Hazelwood Double-Feature: Amazon is clearly all-in on the Ali Hazelwood universe. This announcement comes just as anticipation peaks for the September 23 premiere of The Love Hypothesis on Prime Video, starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman.

<h3>The Colleen Hoover Factor</h3>

Hoover’s involvement as a producer has already set social media ablaze, proving she remains one of the most polarizing yet undeniably influential names in modern publishing. While some fans on platforms like X and Reddit are fiercely protective of Hazelwood’s lighter tone, others see Hoover’s backing as a massive win for ensuring romance adaptations get serious blockbuster budgets in Hollywood.

Hoover is keeping incredibly busy at Amazon MGM Studios. Aside from Love, Theoretically, her Heartbones banner is deep in development on the highly anticipated cinematic adaptation of her own psychological thriller, Verity, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, which is locked in for an October theatrical release.

<h3>The Year Romance Took Over the Screen</h3>

If you feel like your entire Goodreads reading list is migrating to streaming platforms, you aren’t imagining things. This year has officially become a golden era for book-to-screen love stories. Here are a few other massive romance novels that have secured major production deals or hit screens:

<ul><li>People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry: This beloved friends-to-lovers contemporary romance kicked off the year with a highly anticipated Netflix film treatment.</li><li>Off-Campus Series by Elle Kennedy: Prime Video turned this smash-hit hockey romance universe into a glossy, addictive “college soap” style TV series. The first season, adapting the mega-popular book The Deal, premiered to rave reviews from the “book girlies” in May.</li></ul>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1920" height="1080" src="https://media.bolavip.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/29/2026/06/30123033/a-4-7-1920x1080.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-96727"><figcaption>IMDb</figcaption></figure>

<ul><li>Twisted Series by Ana Huang: Netflix officially locked down a deal to turn this dark, high-stakes billionaire romance blueprint into an interconnected anthology series, with plans for each book to get its own drama-filled season.</li><li>Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover: Universal brought this emotional story of grief, redemption, and forbidden second-chances to theaters earlier this spring, making it a stellar year for Hoover’s cinematic empire.</li></ul>

Whether you prefer the sweet banter of a physics lab or the high drama of a billionaire’s penthouse, Hollywood is finally giving the romance genre the respect—and the budget—it deserves.

As part of an honorary reorganization of its “AFI’s 100 Years…100 Laughs” list, the organization moved Brooks’ 1974 comedy “Blazing Saddles” from sixth place to first, officially recognizing it as the funniest film of all time and replacing Billy Wilder’s “Some Like It Hot.”

AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale celebrated the decision by joking that the organization was finally correcting a long-standing injustice, referencing Brooks’ own playful insistence over the years that “Blazing Saddles” deserved the top spot.

<h2>Why ‘Blazing Saddles’ Still Holds a Unique Place in Film History</h2>

Released in 1974, “Blazing Saddles” became one of Mel Brooks’ defining achievements by combining Western conventions with sharp satire aimed at racism, politics, and Hollywood itself. The picture starred Cleavon Little as Bart, an unexpectedly appointed Black sheriff who faces prejudice while protecting a frontier town, alongside Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman, Madeline Kahn, Slim Pickens, and Brooks himself in multiple roles.

The comedy was both a critical and commercial success, earning three Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Kahn. More than three decades later, the Library of Congress selected the title for preservation in the National Film Registry, recognizing its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.

The movie’s legacy has continued well beyond its original theatrical run. It inspired the 1975 television pilot “Black Bart,” later received a loose animated remake in 2022 with “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank,” and has frequently been cited as an influence on later productions that embrace self-aware humor and fourth-wall breaking.

Brooks has also expressed interest in adapting “Blazing Saddles” for the stage, demonstrating that the picture’s impact continues to extend across generations and formats.

If you thought a post-graduation getaway to Thailand sounded like paradise, think again. Directed by horror veteran Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare, Imaginary, Kick-Ass 2), this high-concept creature feature is trading haunted toys for deep-water terror.

<h3>The Plot: A Post-Grad Vacation Gone Deadly</h3>

The Devil’s Mouth follows a close-knit group of friends embarking on one final, epic adventure along Thailand’s stunning coast before facing the realities of adulthood. Looking for an unforgettable thrill, they sign up for a guided swim through a remote, breathtaking cave system known as “The Devil’s Mouth.”

But paradise quickly dissolves into a fight for survival. A freak storm from the week prior has flooded the narrow, labyrinthine waterways with ocean life. While most of the displaced sea creatures perished in the fresh water, one massive, silent apex predator adapted: a ravenous bull shark.

Trapped in the suffocating darkness with limited ways out, the friends must navigate a flooding labyrinth while being actively hunted. As panic spreads and their sense of direction vanishes, old interpersonal tensions flare, trust erodes, and survival becomes a savage psychological game.

<h3>Meet the Star-Studded Cast</h3>

Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate have assembled an absolute dream team of Gen-Z favorites and horror royalty to play potential shark bait:

<ul><li>Kathryn Newton (Abigail, Freaky, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) stars as Sara, a young woman trying to assert her independence before entering the real world.</li><li>Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) plays Max, Sara’s best friend, whose bond is pushed to its absolute limits by the chaos.</li><li>Gavin Casalegno (The Summer I Turned Pretty)</li><li>Nico Hiraga (Booksmart)</li><li>Tommi Rose (A Winter Romance)</li><li>Tayme Thapthimthong (Mechanic: Resurrection)</li></ul>

<h3>Hollywood Pedigree Behind the Screams</h3>

This isn’t just your run-of-the-mill streaming thriller. The film’s original screenplay—penned by Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner—initially made major waves under the title Apex, landing a coveted spot on Hollywood’s 2019 Black List for the best unproduced scripts in the industry.

Adding to Jeff Wadlow’s seasoned directorial hand, the film is produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, the powerhouse producers best known for backing the high-octane John Wick franchise. Audiences can expect razor-sharp tension, slick action, and a heavy dose of underwater anxiety.

<h3>When Can You Watch It?</h3>

Despite high anticipation for the Milly Alcock-led cosmic adventure, the film failed to meet its tracking projections, leaving Warner Bros. and DC Studios facing an uphill battle to turn a profit.

<h2>The Harsh Math: Budget vs. Box Office</h2>

Supergirl took flight in North American theaters but only managed to pull in a soft $38 million domestically. Globally, the numbers weren’t much more heroic, with the film securing just $30 million from 77 international markets, bringing its worldwide opening total to $68 million.

For a standard film, those numbers might be passable—but Supergirl is a heavy-budget tentpole.

<ul><li>The Production Budget: A massive $170 million (with some insiders pushing that figure closer to $186 million), which does not include a hefty global marketing campaign.</li><li>The Break-Even Target: Analysts estimate the movie needs to pull in at least $300 million to $315 million worldwide just to break even, a milestone that now looks incredibly difficult to reach.</li></ul>

<h2>Losing to Toys and Chasing ‘Morbius’</h2>

To make matters worse for the Maid of Might, she was completely overshadowed by Disney and Pixar’s juggernaut Toy Story 5, which comfortably held onto the number-one spot by raking in $70 million in its second weekend alone.

Perhaps the most alarming metric for DC executives is how Supergirl stacks up against historical superhero misses. Its $38 million domestic bow places it below the opening weekends of past DC stumbles like The Flash ($55 million) and, most brutally, behind Sony’s infamous 2022 flop Morbius, which crawled to $39.1 million in its debut.

<h2>Mixed Reception and Missing Demographics</h2>

So, what kept audiences grounded? A mix of tepid reviews and a failure to capture casual moviegoers seems to be the culprit. While critics universally praised House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock for her fierce portrayal of Kara Zor-El, the movie itself struggled to connect.

<ul><li>Rotten Tomatoes: The film currently sits at a divisive 56% critics score.</li><li>CinemaScore: Opening weekend crowds gave it a B-, a grade that usually signals poor word-of-mouth and steep drops in subsequent weeks.</li><li>The Audience Split: Industry data reveals that 59% of the opening weekend crowd was male and 65% was over the age of 25. The core target demographic for a modern Supergirl film—Gen Z females—simply didn’t show up.</li></ul>

<h2>DC Studios Calls It a “Long-Term Strategy”</h2>

Despite the disappointing numbers, DC Studios leadership is preaching patience. Speaking with The New York Times, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran insisted that this singular bump in the road won’t derail the grand architecture that he and James Gunn have planned for the DCU.

“While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,” Safran stated.

With Universal’s Minions &amp; Monsters looming on the horizon next week, Supergirl has a very narrow window to find its footing. The film features incredible practical effects and an undeniably magnetic lead performance, but in a theatrical landscape that has grown increasingly unforgiving to superhero fatigue, it takes more than a famous cape to guarantee a box office win.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the 55-year-old actor opened up about the grueling conditions of filming the massive production—revealing that when it came to suffering for the craft, Hollywood hierarchy went right out the window.

<h2>The Great Equalizer: The Open Ocean</h2>

Filming a sprawling sea epic means dealing with Mother Nature’s worst moods. For Damon, who steps into the legendary sandals of Odysseus, the sheer physical intensity of the shoot meant everyone—from the top of the call sheet to the production assistants—shared the exact same hardships.

“There was no special treatment,” Damon confessed. “If you’re out on a boat in the middle of the ocean and you get caught in a storm, you get wet with everybody else.”

According to the actor, the harsh realities of the open ocean meant standard movie-star luxuries were completely off the table.

“Nobody’s getting a hot beverage that you’re not getting. You know what I mean? Everybody’s on equal footing, including Chris, who was just as cold and wet as everybody else throughout the whole thing.”

<h2>Bonded by the Storm</h2>

Knowing that the mastermind behind the camera was shivering right alongside them made a massive difference for the cast, which features an ensemble lineup including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson.

Damon noted that Nolan’s hands-on approach and willingness to endure the exact same punishing environment created an incredibly tight-knit unit.

<ul><li>A Shared Struggle: Experiencing the intense weather side-by-side stripped away the typical Hollywood divide between elite talent and crew.</li><li>True Camaraderie: “So that made it feel like we were really all in it together, because we were,” Damon added. “I do feel really bonded with everybody who was on that movie, cast and crew, because it was so challenging for everyone.”</li></ul>

<h2>More Like an Expedition Than a Movie</h2>

Adapting Homer’s foundational Greek poem is an entirely different beast compared to a standard studio shoot. The epic saga unfolds across 24 non-linear books and follows the perilous 10-year journey of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War.

Translating that massive, god-defying voyage to IMAX screens required a level of endurance that felt closer to a historical voyage than a Hollywood production.

“Every single day of filming that movie stands out because it felt more like an expedition than a film,” Damon explained.

To bring Nolan’s uncompromising vision to life, the entire production had to work at absolute peak capacity, with zero room for slacking off.

“It was so difficult to get the shots that we got, the way that we got them, that it really required every single person on that cast and crew to just completely max out day after day after day,” he continued.

With The Odyssey scheduled to hit theaters this July, anticipation is reaching a fever pitch. If Damon’s behind-the-scenes insights are any indication, audiences aren’t just getting a movie—they’re getting a front-row seat to a masterclass in cinematic survival.

We’ll see if all that freezing rain and lack of hot cocoa pays off when Odysseus finally makes his way home to the big screen.

When Lionsgate and Universal Pictures announced they were partnering with producer Graham King (Bohemian Rhapsody) to bring the complicated, larger-than-life story of Michael Jackson to the silver screen, the industry braced itself. Could a music biopic replicate the high-brow, prestige allure that turned Christopher Nolan’s three-hour nuclear drama into a near-billion-dollar phenomenon three summers ago?

The numbers are officially in, and the answer is a resounding, record-shattering yes.

The cinematic portrait MICHAEL has earned an estimated $977.4 million globally. In doing so, the film has officially eclipsed the $965–$976 million lifetime haul of Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biographical film in the history of cinema.

Even more staggering? The film shows no signs of running out of gas. Box office tracking models now project MICHAEL to clear the remaining distance within the week, making it the first biopic to ever cross the legendary $1 billion threshold at the global box office.

<figure class="wp-block-table"><table><tbody><tr><td>Rank</td><td>Film Title</td><td>Release Year</td><td>Main Subject</td><td>Final Worldwide Gross</td></tr><tr><td>1</td><td>MICHAEL</td><td>2026</td><td>Michael Jackson</td><td>$977.4 Million (Active)</td></tr><tr><td>2</td><td>Oppenheimer</td><td>2023</td><td>J. Robert Oppenheimer</td><td>$976.7 Million</td></tr><tr><td>3</td><td>Bohemian Rhapsody</td><td>2018</td><td>Freddie Mercury / Queen</td><td>$910.8 Million</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>

<h2>From a $217M Opening to Global Dominance</h2>

The film’s journey to historical supremacy was catalyzed by a monstrous debut. When it landed in theaters on April 24, 2026, it defied conservative studio tracking by pulling in a jaw-dropping $217.4 million global opening weekend, securing the biggest domestic and international debut ever recorded for a music-centered film.

What kept the film’s momentum alive over its two-month theatrical run was a perfectly balanced dual-market attack:

<ul><li>The Domestic Stronghold: Domestically, handled by Lionsgate, the film stayed resilient by pulling in daily totals north of $1 million for over 50 consecutive days. It currently rests at a spectacular $370 million in North America, ranking it as the third-highest-grossing domestic release in Lionsgate history behind only the first two Hunger Games films.</li><li>The International Juggernaut: Overseas, where Universal Pictures spearheaded the release, the King of Pop’s enduring international footprint took total control. The film pulled in over $607 million internationally</li></ul>

<h2>Why the Masterpiece Is Defying the Odds</h2>

While skeptics wondered if a modern audience would turn out in droves for a film addressing the layered, turbulent life of the pop icon, director Antoine Fuqua managed to deliver a visually stunning, emotionally raw, and uncompromising epic.

Anchored by a transformative, eerie, and career-defining lead performance by Michael’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, the film successfully captured the unyielding physical demands of the artist’s legendary choreography while refusing to shy away from the intense media scrutiny and isolation that defined his off-stage life.

<h2>The Countdown to $1 Billion</h2>

With a highly anticipated rollout in Japan courtesy of Kino Films already adding another $20 million to the pot this month, the path forward is clear. MICHAEL needs less than $23 million to cross the ten-figure finish line.

If there is one filmmaker in modern Hollywood who has earned the right to lecture studios on how to handle a massive budget, it’s Christopher Nolan. From delivering a near-billion-dollar biographical drama about a theoretical physicist in Oppenheimer to convincing executives to spend $160 million on an original script about dream-heists (Inception), Nolan has continually proven that audiences will reward intellectual ambition.

With his massive, star-studded adaptation of The Odyssey swinging into theaters next month, the Oscar-winning director sat down for a wide-ranging, candid interview with The New York Times.

Nolan didn’t hold back, directly addressing Hollywood’s current era of franchise fatigue, formulaic writing, and corporate risk aversion. According to the director, the industry’s current obsession with recycling familiar intellectual property under the guise of financial safety is fundamentally broken.

<h2>The Illusion of Safety: “The Audience Is Looking for Something New”</h2>

In the interview, Nolan challenged the core philosophy governing modern studio boardrooms. As production budgets balloon, financiers routinely lean on safe bets—sequels, remakes, and tightly monitored creative formulas—to protect their bottom lines. Nolan argues that this exact line of thinking achieves the exact opposite result.

“If you’re really interested in movies and the history of movies, the one thing you see absolutely is that you have to take risks to succeed,” Nolan explained. “The biggest risk with blockbuster films is to play it safe.”

When asked why studios continue to struggle to recapture the cultural lightning-in-a-bottle of past eras, his assessment was blunt:

“[It] doesn’t work. The audience is looking for something new.”

To ground his point, Nolan reflected on his 2000 breakthrough thriller, Memento. He recalled pitching the reverse-chronological screenplay to his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas. While she loved the script, she initially worried that the unconventional, backward storytelling structure was a massive gamble that might alienate distributors.

Nolan countered that the formal risk was exactly what would make the movie stand out. While distributors initially “didn’t get it,” the audience ultimately did. For Nolan, the true gamble isn’t the moviegoers—it’s the gatekeepers. “The risk is the intermediaries—the financiers, the studio,” he noted. “If you can get to the audience… in the past we’ve been well rewarded for having faith in them.”

<h2>The 12-Time ‘Star Wars’ Experience: The Pure Essence of Cinema</h2>

Nolan’s unwavering belief in the power of immersive, original world-building isn’t just a professional stance; it’s rooted in his earliest cinematic memories. During the NYT conversation, the director revealed a delightful piece of personal trivia that perfectly encapsulates his love for the theatrical experience: Christopher Nolan watched STAR WARS 12 times in theaters when it was first released.

For a young Nolan sitting in the dark in 1977, George Lucas’s space opera wasn’t just entertainment—it was a spiritual awakening regarding what the silver screen was capable of achieving.

“That, for me, was just the essence of this medium — create an entire world that you can understand and live in, that’s absolutely different from everyday life. That’s the great joy of movies.”

<h2>Betting on ‘The Odyssey’</h2>

Nolan’s comments carry an immense amount of weight as the industry prepares for the July release of The Odyssey. While some internet critics have pointed out the slight irony of a director preaching “originality” while adapting a 2,700-year-old epic poem by Homer, film purists know exactly what Nolan means. The risk doesn’t lie in the familiarity of the source material; it lies in the refusal to compromise on scale, narrative complexity, and practical filmmaking.

By prioritizing formal innovation, real locations, and trusting the intelligence of the person sitting in the auditorium, Christopher Nolan continues to show Hollywood that the safest path to immortality is to step completely off the beaten path.
