The romantic comedy is definitely not dead, and might be in a renaissance. Not only ‘Anyone But You’ was one of the most profitable films of 2023, streaming services have also produced some well-received movies of the genre, such as “The Idea of You,” which has become the top film on Prime Video. And, now, fans of the rom-com will have another title to wait for, as Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox will star in “Merv” (working title).
Deschanel, 44, is of course best known for her role of Jess in the sitcom “The New Girl,” which she played from 2011 and 2018. Apart from that, she has also experience in the genre, having appeared in titles such as “Failure to Launch” (2006), “Yes Man” (2008) and, of course, the iconic “500 Days of Summer” (2009).
Meanwhile, Cox, 41, has been busy in production for the upcoming “Daredevil: Born Again,” a revival of the Netflix’s series that made him part of the MCU. Apart from his role as Matt Murdock, he recently appeared in “Treason,” another miniseries for the streaming service.
What is ‘Merv’ about?
According to Deadline, which was the first outlet to report the news, the movie follows a separated couple who discovers that their shared dog is depressed after their breakup. In an effort to uplift their furry friend’s mood, they tentatively reconcile and plan a sunny trip to Florida during the holidays.

Who writes and directs ‘Merv’?
The film is being directed by Jessica Swale, a British playwright and director. Among her other titles, you can find her short film “Leading Lady Parts” (2018) and her first feature film “Summerland” (2020), which she also wrote. Meanwhile, the wife and husband duo Linsey Stewart and Dane Clark wrote the script.
