As we approach the Cannes Market, films poised to become the next big thing start to be sold, bought, and signed for production. These transactions mark the initial stages of pictures that may later garner three or four Oscars at the most important event of the year for cinema.

Typically, in the weeks leading up to the market’s opening, potential blockbusters begin to generate buzz. This was evident recently with Julia Ducournau’s next project, “Alpha.” Now, another title is generating considerable attention: Willem Dafoe and Sandra Huller’s upcoming movie, “Late Fame.”

It’s evident that this title will likely capture the Academy’s interest. Huller arrives fresh from leading two Oscar-winning films, “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Zone of Interest,” while Dafoe boasts a solid career and just starred in the acclaimed “Poor Things.”

What will Late Fame be about?

Late Fame” is set to be an adaptation of an unpublished novella by the Austrian playwright Arthur Schnitzler, recently discovered from his archives. The story centers around Eduard Saxberger, set to be portrayed by Dafoe, a man whose life revolves solely around his office job but who also secretly wrote a book of poetry.

Suddenly, Saxberger’s project gains unexpected recognition when a group of young artists rediscovers his work and hails him as a genius. Among them is Gloria, poised to be played by Hüller, a talented actress who forms a deep bond with Saxberger.

When will Late Fame be released?

It’s quite probable that MK2 Films, the distribution company behind the picture, will aim for it to compete in the 2025 Oscars. As per the event’s regulations, the film must have a theatrical release between January 1 and December 31 of 2024 to be eligible for consideration.

According to Variety, filming is scheduled to begin in New York in the fall. Considering all factors, it’s reasonable to anticipate that “Late Fame” will be released in the latter months of the year. However, there’s also the possibility that its producers may opt to wait a bit longer and target the 2026 Oscars instead.

Who will be directing and writing Late Fame?

The director of “Late Fame” will be Kent Jones, renowned for his widely acclaimed cult films such as “Diane,” “Hitchcock/Truffaut,” and “A Letter to Elia.”
