The sci-fi survival film, starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, is being described as a throwback to the kind of large-scale, family-centered blockbusters that defined the 1980s and 1990s. According to reactions shared on social media following the picture’s world premiere, its combination of dinosaurs, suburban Americana and Spielbergian adventure is already standing out.

The Spielberg comparisons are particularly prominent in the early reactions. Jonathan Sim called the movie “A Spielbergian ’80s small-town thriller” and described it as “E.T. meets Jurassic Park.” He also praised its mix of genres, calling it a “Perfect combination of family drama, humor, action, and genuine terror” and adding, “Dino delight!”

The Amblin comparisons continued throughout the reactions. JuniorFett described “The End of Oak Street” as “a brutal, insanely fun, Amblin-esque thrill ride,” adding that once the dinosaurs appear, “it’s relentless with a Land of the Lost/Twilight Zone twist.” The reaction also singled out Hathaway, praising how the title combines its spectacle with “thrills and heart” while following a family “dealing with pain.”
The film’s visual and musical identity also received attention. The Holo Files wrote that the movie is “imbued with an Amblin / Spielbergian sense of wonder,” pointing to “the 1980s suburban setting,” “the family dynamics” and Michael Giacchino’s “John Williams-inspired score.” The reaction praised “plenty of cool visuals of dinosaurs roaming around suburbia” and said Mitchell creates “some palpably intense set pieces.”
There was at least one significant caveat in that response, which argued that the picture “takes far too long to get going” and suffers from “stuttered pacing.” The family material was also criticized as “uninteresting” and “underdeveloped.” Still, the reaction concluded that “there’s still a lot of fun to be had here,” despite believing the picture could have made better use of its premise and cast.
The more enthusiastic reactions emphasized the intensity of the experience.
