Chris Evans Teases a “Brutal” Fate for Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Chris Evans has teased that the character faces an especially difficult chapter when he returns in “Avengers: Doomsday,” giving fans another reason to wonder what Marvel has planned for one of the MCU’s most iconic heroes. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Evans discussed his return during a recent Q&A at Fan Expo Boston and described Rogers’ storyline in strikingly blunt terms.

Chris Evans Says Steve Rogers Has Another Rough Chapter Ahead

Evans’ return is notable because Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America. At the conclusion of “Avengers: Endgame,” he passed the shield to Sam Wilson and chose a life with Peggy Carter after traveling back in time. “Doomsday” will bring him back into the MCU, but the story is not simply restoring him to his former position. The film is set to bring together heroes from multiple universes as they confront Doctor Doom, creating circumstances big enough to pull even a retired Steve back into the fight.

The new chapter also reunites Evans with Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors behind “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” For Evans, that history apparently comes with a familiar problem for his character. “The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers,” the actor said during the Fan Expo appearance.

He went on to describe the directors’ approach to the character, saying, “Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him.” Evans added that, in their view, a hero is someone “who gets punched so many times but still gets up.”

This time, however, Evans indicated that Marvel has pushed things even further. “So they keep finding new ways to kick his b**t. And this one was brutal.” The comment offers no details about what actually happens to Steve, leaving the circumstances of his return firmly under wraps.

That uncertainty has made Steve one of the movie’s biggest question marks. He is returning after what was presented as a definitive ending for the character, while Sam Wilson remains Captain America. Evans has indicated that his comeback is tied to a specific reason the heroes need Steve Rogers, and the scale of the multiversal conflict gives Marvel plenty of room to put him in an unfamiliar position.
