With Tom Holland preparing to lead Spider-Man: Brand New Day into theaters, attention has increasingly shifted beyond the next release to the long-term future of the franchise—and Sony’s top executive has now offered one of his clearest answers yet.
Will Sony keep making live-action Spider-Man movies?
Sony intends to continue making live-action Spider-Man movies. Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman made that clear when asked whether the studio plans to produce more films featuring the iconic superhero, responding:
“I think Spider-Man will go on long beyond all of us. I hope so, and I think so“. His comments reinforce Sony’s long-term commitment to its most valuable franchise and suggest that Peter Parker’s cinematic future extends well beyond the current chapter.
His optimism comes as Spider-Man: Brand New Day ushers in a new era for Tom Holland’s version of Peter Parker. Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the upcoming film resets the character’s status quo, allowing Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures to explore fresh stories while maintaining the partnership that has produced some of the franchise’s biggest box office successes.
Sony’s confidence is backed by Spider-Man’s enduring commercial value. Since the release of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in 2002, the character has generated billions of dollars at the global box office, while Holland’s trilogy culminated with No Way Home, one of the highest-grossing superhero films of all time.
The continued collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios has also expanded the character’s reach, integrating Spider-Man into the MCU while allowing Sony to retain the film rights.
