What is ‘Past Lives’ about?
The film follows a decades-long connection between Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends who grew apart after Nora and her family emigrated to Canada. The story centers around Hae Sung’s visit to Nora, after she already married Arthur.
It stars Greta Lee as Nora, Teo Yoo as Hae Sung and John Magaro as Arthur. Yoo will be competing for a BAFTA as Best Actor. Meanwhile, Lee was nominated for the Golden Globe and Critics Choice, but missed the Oscar nomination.
Celine Song was inspired by her own life
In The Hollywood Reporter’s Writers Roundtable, Song revealed that she had the idea for the film after having dinner with her husband in New York and her childhood’s sweetheart. “Because they do not speak each other’s languages and I do, I was translating for these two people who cared for me and knew very differently,” she explained.
