There is a particular brand of anxiety that unites even the most hardened horror fans: the collective, stomach-churning fear for the well-being of a four-legged protagonist. In the cinematic world, human carnage is expected, but the safety of a loyal dog is a non-negotiable emotional lifeline.
This anxiety has crystallized around the 2025 film Good Boy, a horror story told largely from the perspective of a devoted golden retriever named Indy, who watches as his owner, Todd, slowly succumbs to a malevolent presence in their remote family home.
As the film’s premise places the fate of the perceptive canine directly in the path of the supernatural, the central question for many moviegoers has eclipsed the mystery of the haunting itself: does the dog die at the end?

While the dog survives, the film doesn’t offer a traditional “happy” horror ending. Indy is exposed to supernatural peril throughout the film as he tries to protect his owner, Todd, from what he perceives as a demonic entity in their new, rural home.
The ending reveals that the “entity” Indy is fighting is largely a metaphor for Todd’s terminal illness or death itself. Indy’s frantic warnings and attempts to save Todd are ultimately fruitless.
The director and writer, Ben Leonberg, confirmed Indy’s survival prior to the film’s wide release because searches for “does the dog die in Good Boy?” had spiked over 2,000%. Leonberg stated that killing off the beloved animal was never considered, as the film is ultimately a story about loss and grief from the loyal dog’s perspective.
