Since the dawn of cinema, filmmakers have drawn inspiration from countless books, resulting in adaptations that range from iconic to largely forgotten. Now, a new chapter unfolds in this genre collaboration, as “Saltburn” director Emerald Fennell prepares to create her own version of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights”.

As is well known, the novel explores the passionate and destructive love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw. While specific plot details of Fennell’s adaptation remain under wraps, it is anticipated that she will offer an eclectic take, similar to her approach in the 2023 black comedy starring Barry Keoghan.

Given the numerous adaptations of Brontë’s beloved work in both film and television, fans are understandably protective of this cherished story. Now, they are already raising concerns about a particular inaccuracy that they refuse to overlook.

Significant error in Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ sparks debate

Fans of “Wuthering Heights” are no strangers to adaptations, yet whenever news of a new version emerges, they eagerly investigate and share their thoughts on social media about its fidelity to the 1847 novel.

In the case of Emerald Fennell’s announced film, many were quick to point out that Jacob Elordi, cast as Heathcliff, strays significantly from the original character description. Heathcliff is depicted as resembling a Roma or Gypsy, characterized by dark hair, dark eyes, and darker skin—attributes that Elordi clearly does not possess.

Fans have voiced their concerns on X, noting that Heathcliff’s racial discrimination is central to the plot, raising questions about how the adaptation will handle this storyline with a white actor in the lead.

One user, @thenadianoor, garnered attention with a tweet encapsulating the sentiment: Heathcliff is described as dark-skinned and a ‘lascar,’ a slang term for 19th-century Indian sailors. This casting choice misses the mark. She (Emerald Fennell) could’ve easily cast Dev Patel.”

Margot Robbie has been chosen as Catherine Earnshaw, as first reported by Deadline. While opinions about her casting are mixed, Jacob Elordi’s role has sparked the most discussion on X, where his name quickly became a trending topic.
