“Grave Encounters” first shocked audiences in 2011 with its chilling found footage approach, following a team of paranormal investigators as they explored the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. Blending intense scares with a mockumentary style, the film quickly gained a cult following for its inventive scares and eerie atmosphere, standing out in the crowded horror landscape of the early 2010s. Its mix of suspense, claustrophobic settings, and unpredictable terror left viewers questioning what was real and what was part of the team’s descent into madness.
Over the years, the movie has remained a touchstone for horror fans who appreciate tension-driven storytelling and the thrills of found footage filmmaking. Its 2012 sequel expanded the mythology, but the original still retains a unique, haunting charm that continues to resonate. Now, nearly a decade and a half later, the story is set to return in a new form.

Long and Bosworth praised Minihan’s unique combination of “brilliant filmmaker and fun collaborator,” describing the project as a chance to honor the legacy of the original while exploring even darker territory.
Minihan and Ortiz reflected on the origins of the first picture, recalling that it was made in their 20s on a shoestring budget but still managed to terrify audiences. “Justin has defined genre cinema for over a decade and is the definitive scream king,” they said, emphasizing his perfect fit for bringing a fresh perspective to the eerie world of Collingwood Hospital. Their goal is to maintain the intense, immersive horror that made the original a standout, while also expanding its mythology for contemporary audiences.
