Timothée Chalamet has cemented his status as one of the most popular movie stars. While the sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two” is currently one of the most grossing films at the box office, he also has the number one film on Max right now.

According to FlixPatrol, “Wonka,” which arrived on the platform on March 8, has reached the number one spot of the most streamed list worldwide. The musical comedy, directed by Paul King, stars Chamalet as a younger version of Roald Dahl’s famous chocolatier.

Before conquering Max, the movie was also a worldwide hit at the box office. The movie has grossed a global tally of $625.9 million, being one of the highest-grossing pictures of 2023. But, apart from being a commercial success, it was also critically acclaimed.

Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Wonka’ beat all the odds with charm

Apart from Chalamet as the titular character, the cast includes Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant.

Chalamet admitted to GameRadar+ that he was skeptical of accepting the role because he didn’t want the film to feel as a “cynical money grab,” but he was convinced as he thought the script, co-written by King and Simon Farnaby, was “very clever.”

He also said that King is a “director you don’t say no to,” as well as he desired to do a musical. And, against all odds, the film received mostly positive reviews, and he was praised for his singing and dancing. However, not all critics were too convinced.

Much of the criticism was drawn to the fact that the character lost his “edginess,” and that the story was very “square.” However, for Chalamet, that was exactly the point of the film, to showcase a version of the character that wasn’t “the crazy, cynical, kind of jaded, brain-fried version” of the previous films.
