Hulu has once again renewed its podium for the top productions of the week, and this time it’s a dark comedy that has become the fourth most-watched on the platform globally. It’s Maggie Moore(s), starring Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Tina Fey (Mean Girls and This Is Where I Leave You).

The duo not only brought their distinctive touch to the title but quickly managed to connect and put together a great parody on screen. They have worked together on various occasions, such as “30 Rock” and other projects, including events and interview programs, so their chemistry is undeniable.

With a plot full of somewhat peculiar jokes, lots of action, crime and chaos, the film has become a favorite among users, managing to enter the top 10. It first saw the light in 2023, directed by John Slattery (Ant-Man and The Adjustment Bureau) from a script written by Paul Bernbaum (Next and Hardball).

And then things start to spiral out of control.

What did the critics say about Maggie Moore(s)?

Unfortunately for the team behind Maggie Moore(s), the critics were not too kind in their reviews of the comedy. Many have compared it to a low-budget production, lacking much to reach the level of other films starring the main actors.

Brian Tallerico, who writes on the official Robert Ebert site, was one of those who gave his opinion and only awarded it two out of five stars, stating, “Overall, Slattery can’t find the right tone for this strange tale of two victims with the same name. The real story of Mary Morris is so hard to believe that I’m not surprised it inspired a writer like Bernbaum, but one feels that this final story has gone through dozens of iterations, both as a script and then in production“.

Jeannette Catsoulis of the New York Times didn’t hesitate to join the criticism and made it clear that she was not at all satisfied with the story, writing, “Any plot impetus, then, is solely down to the heroic efforts of Micah Stock and Christopher Denham as the bereaved husbands of the murdered Maggies, though their comedic vigor is undermined by the utter desolation of Paul Bernbaum’s script. Desperately unhappy people rarely laugh for a minute“.
