The Marvels was one of the most anticipated films in the MCU, not only to find out how the story of the popular Captain continues but also because even before its release, it was already receiving a lot of criticism, especially regarding the narrative and storyline it develops.

This morning, it was confirmed that Disney+ users wasted no time in hitting play, making it the most-watched film in the catalog globally, disregarding the comments and critiques. According to Flix Patrol, it has managed to surpass titles like Elemental and Moana.

Brie Larson returned to take on the lead role, accompanied by Teyonah Parris (They Cloned Tyrone) as Monica Rambeau, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as the iconic Nick Fury and Zawe Ashton (Velvet Buzzsaw) as the villain, Dar-Benn.

Now, the continuation of Captain Marvel has made its streaming debut, and despite all the negative criticism, it has succeeded in winning over users of the service globally, being number 1 in different countries, including the United States.

Marvel Studios was a powerhouse of successes until the conclusion of Avengers in 2019, but since then, they have faced challenges in creating a film that truly triumphs like its predecessors. The Marvels was no exception, as it has been labeled as the biggest failure.

The sequel with Brie Larson had the lowest box office earnings for an MCU film, according to Forbes. In total, it only managed to gather $209 million worldwide, falling below the usual figures. Its budget was quite high, around $270 million.

Up to this point, it was also the most expensive of all, surpassing even the Avengers installments. A significant portion of the investment was directed towards the visual effects of the film, where in several scenes, we see only space cats.

What is The Marvels about?

The Marvels once again features Carol Danvers as the protagonist, who has already freed herself from the tyrannical Kree. However, during the civil war that the Kree provoked, a disturbance in the space-time continuum was created, so she must investigate what has happened.

Why did The Marvels fail?

Well, it wasn’t just the abundance of special effects that made The Marvels a rather peculiar production, ultimately resulting in a box office failure. Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke about what actually happened with the film from his perspective, attributing some of the issues to production restrictions related to the pandemic.

He also mentioned that the lack of supervision on the set influenced the project’s outcome not being ideal, pointing out that expectations regarding box office performance had become excessively high.

On the other hand, several box office experts have stated that they don’t believe the “superhero fatigue” phenomenon really affected its performance, as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a resounding success, providing a perfect conclusion to the trilogy created by James Gunn.
