The sitcom ran for 10 seasons on NBC from 1994 to 2004, with Perry among its six central cast members. According to IMDb’s trivia page for the star, one of the stories associated with his early years involves a teacher who was not particularly impressed by the actor’s habit of joking around in class.

Matthew Perry Turned an Old Criticism Into a Full-Circle Moment

During his high school years, Perry reportedly had a reputation for being the kind of student who could not resist making jokes. One of his teachers, identified in accounts as Dr. Webb or Mr. Webb, eventually took issue with his behavior and warned him about where that attitude could lead.

Perry was reportedly told that he would never amount to anything if he continued treating everything as a joke. At the time, there was no way to know how far the young actor’s career would eventually take him, but the comment remained with him long after his school years were over.

Perry went on to build a trajectory that changed dramatically after he was cast as Chandler Bing on “Friends.” The character became known for his sarcastic humor and quick wit, qualities that became central to Perry’s performance throughout the series. Chandler was also written as one of the group’s more humorous characters, while remaining a source of reason for his friends.

By the time Perry reached the height of his “Friends” fame, he had a very different kind of evidence that his career had worked out. His first cover of People magazine gave him an opportunity to revisit that old prediction, and according to the widely circulated anecdote, he mailed a copy of the issue to Dr. Webb.

Perry had taken the joking personality that had once drawn criticism from a teacher and turned it into a defining part of his professional identity. His work on “Friends” ultimately became part of a television phenomenon that remained one of the most successful sitcoms of its era. All 10 seasons ranked among the top 10 television seasons in their respective years, while the 2004 finale attracted around 52.5 million U.S. viewers.
