According to IMDb trivia and accounts surrounding the production of “North by Northwest,” Hitchcock decided not to reunite with Stewart after “Vertigo” failed to meet commercial expectations, bringing an end to one of Hollywood’s most successful creative partnerships.

How ‘Vertigo’ Ended James Stewart and Alfred Hitchcock’s Legendary Partnership

By the late 1950s, Stewart had become one of Hitchcock’s favorite leading men. Their collaborations on “Rope,” “Rear Window,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” and “Vertigo” helped define the suspense genre, combining Hitchcock’s meticulous direction with Stewart’s everyman screen presence. Together, they produced several films that would later be recognized among the director’s greatest achievements.

Despite that success, “Vertigo” proved to be a turning point. Although the picture is now widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever made, its original theatrical run fell short of expectations both critically and commercially. Hitchcock concluded that Stewart, who starred opposite the much younger Kim Novak, no longer appeared convincing as a romantic leading man and blamed that factor in part for the film’s disappointing box office performance.

Stewart hoped to reunite with Hitchcock on “North by Northwest” and was reportedly the original choice to play advertising executive Roger Thornhill. Instead, the director ultimately cast Cary Grant, even though Grant was four years older than Stewart. Some accounts have also suggested that Hitchcock delayed moving forward with the project until Stewart had committed to another film, allowing the casting change to happen without directly turning down his longtime collaborator.

That decision marked the end of an extraordinary partnership. Stewart and Hitchcock never made another picture together after “Vertigo,” while “North by Northwest” became one of the director’s biggest commercial successes. Ironically, “Vertigo” has since undergone one of the most remarkable critical reappraisals in cinema history and is now frequently ranked among the greatest hits ever made.
