As “Grease” celebrates its 48th anniversary, we’re taking a look back at the stars who brought Rydell High to life and where their careers and lives have taken them since.

John Travolta

Nearly five decades after sliding into movie history as Danny Zuko, John Travolta is still finding new ways to challenge himself. This year, he made his directorial debut with “Propeller One-Way Night Coach,” a semi-autobiographical drama that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and stars his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta. The actor is also set to share the screen with her in the upcoming thriller “Black Tides,” continuing a creative partnership that has become increasingly important to him.

Cannes further celebrated his legacy by presenting him with an Honorary Palme d’Or for his contributions to cinema. When he is not working, Travolta spends much of his time pursuing his passion for aviation from his unique Florida home, which includes its own private runway.

Olivia Newton-John

Although Olivia Newton-John passed away in 2022 at the age of 73, her influence remains deeply woven into music, film, and cancer advocacy. Best remembered by many as Sandy Olsson in “Grease,” she spent her later years championing wellness initiatives and supporting cancer research after her own decades-long battle with the disease. The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne continues that mission today, while annual fundraising events held in her honor help support patients and their families.

Her husband, John Easterling, and daughter, Chloe Rose Lattanzi, remain active in preserving her legacy and sharing her message of hope. Fans have also been treated to posthumous releases, including a previously recorded duet of “Jolene” with Dolly Parton.

Jeff Conaway

Jeff Conaway’s portrayal of tough guy Kenickie made him one of the most memorable cast members of “Grease,” while his later role as Bobby Wheeler on “Taxi” further cemented his place in television history. In the years that followed, however, Conaway faced well-documented struggles with drug and alcohol addiction that often overshadowed his professional achievements.

He openly discussed those challenges on the reality series “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” offering viewers a candid look at his attempts to recover. Conaway passed away in 2011 at the age of 60 after complications related to pneumonia. Though his life was marked by personal difficulties, his performances in two beloved classics continue to resonate with audiences decades later.

Barry Pearl

While many fans still recognize him as the lovable Doody from “Grease,” Barry Pearl has built a remarkably varied career both on and off the stage. In recent years, he has devoted much of his energy to directing theater productions, including the Los Angeles staging of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” Pearl continues to perform as well, appearing in live productions, fan conventions, and even making screen appearances such as a role in Netflix’s “Nobody Wants This.”

Beyond acting, he teaches film arts through Joey Travolta’s Inclusion Film Company, helping members of the special needs community explore careers in filmmaking. He also remains one of the most enthusiastic ambassadors for “Grease,” frequently reuniting with former castmates and celebrating the movie’s enduring popularity with fans around the world.

Michael Tucci

For audiences who grew up watching “Grease,” Michael Tucci will always be remembered as the fast-talking Sonny LaTierri. Although he has stepped back from the busy pace of Hollywood, Tucci still accepts select acting projects and most recently appeared in the 2024 film “PinkCity: A Psychedelic Meditation.” Earlier in his career, he balanced acting with a second passion, spending years teaching theater and fine arts at St. Francis High School in California before retiring from the classroom.

These days, he enjoys a more relaxed schedule while remaining open to new opportunities in film and television. Fans can also find him at “Grease” reunions and convention appearances, where he continues to celebrate the movie that made him a household name.

Kelly Ward

Kelly Ward may have found fame as T-Bird member Putzie in “Grease,” but much of his success has come behind the scenes. Over the years, he has built an impressive career in animation, becoming an Emmy Award-winning voice director whose work can be heard across numerous Disney productions and popular children’s series. His credits include helping shape performances for shows such as “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Star vs. the Forces of Evil,” and “Jake and the Never Land Pirates.”

Away from the recording booth, Ward serves as an adjunct professor at USC’s School of Dramatic Arts, where he teaches musical theater and mentors the next generation of performers. He also remains closely connected to the “Grease” fan community through reunions, interviews, and documentaries celebrating the film’s enduring legacy.

Stockard Channing

Stockard Channing was already an established actress when she took on the role of Rizzo, yet the sharp-tongued Pink Lady remains one of the most celebrated characters of her career. Nearly five decades later, Channing continues to work steadily across film, theater, and directing, with much of her recent activity centered in the United Kingdom. She recently appeared in London’s West End production of “Elektra” and expanded her creative résumé by making her directorial debut with a staging of Samuel Beckett’s “Krapp’s Last Tape” at the Edinburgh Festival.

Fans will soon see her return to one of her other beloved roles when she reprises Aunt Frances Owens in “Practical Magic 2” alongside Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, and Dianne Wiest. Now based primarily in London, Channing remains a vibrant presence in the entertainment world well into her eighth decade.

Didi Conn

As Frenchy, Didi Conn brought warmth and humor to one of the most beloved characters in “Grease,” and she has remained a familiar face in entertainment ever since. Rather than slowing down, Conn continues to take on acting roles, recently appearing on the CBS series “Elsbeth” and the Fox medical dramedy “Best Medicine.”

She has also ventured further into children’s programming as the creator and executive producer of “Didi Lightful,” an animated preschool musical featuring songs written by her husband, acclaimed composer David Shire. Outside of her creative work, Conn has spent years advocating for autism awareness after her son Daniel’s diagnosis.

Jamie Donnelly

Jamie Donnelly earned a special place in “Grease” history by playing Jan in both the original Broadway production and the hit 1978 film adaptation. Today, she remains deeply connected to the entertainment industry through acting, coaching, and fan engagement. Donnelly frequently appears at conventions and special events around the world, where she shares stories from her long career with audiences who continue to celebrate the musical’s legacy.

She also takes on occasional television and independent film roles, including a recent appearance in the comedy “Stationed at Home.” In addition, the veteran performer works as a private acting coach, drawing on decades of experience that stretch from “Grease” to the original stage productions of “The Rocky Horror Show.”

Dinah Manoff

After a successful career in film and television, Dinah Manoff has largely shifted her attention away from acting and toward writing. The actress, who played Pink Lady Marty Maraschino in “Grease,” has found a new creative outlet as a novelist, recently releasing the audiobook version of “The Real True Hollywood Story of Jackie Gold” with her own narration. She regularly connects with readers through virtual book clubs and literary discussions, where she shares insights into her writing process and creative journey.
