News of the pregnancy arrives more than a year after the death of filmmaker Jeff Baena, Plaza’s former husband and longtime creative collaborator. The two met in 2011 and built both a personal and professional partnership over the following decade, eventually marrying in a small ceremony in 2021. Their relationship, however, had already shifted prior to his death, with the couple separating in September 2024.
Baena died in January 2025 at the age of 47. In the months that followed, Plaza largely stepped back from public appearances, withdrawing from scheduled commitments before gradually returning to work.
The current reaction to her pregnancy has unfolded largely on social media, where a mix of responses has taken shape. While many fans have offered congratulations, others have questioned the timing, with some posts characterizing the development as premature given the proximity to Baena’s death.
