Rupert Sanders, the director of the remake, discussed the on-screen connection between the actors and mentioned the casting of the singer and actress during an interview with Film Updates, the entertainment-focused site.
He didn’t hesitate to mention their chemistry and said “The first day of shooting was the lake scene. They were smoking blunts together, swimming, kissing, giggling. It was like, ‘Okay, this is good. They are in love’“.
