The Shadow Strays” is a new Indonesian thriller that has recently premiered on Netflix and has quickly become the most-watched movie worldwide, mainly due to its incredible performances and its intense action plot.

The story stars Aurora Ribero and follows Codename 13, a 17-year-old assassin suspended after a botched mission in Japan. She meets Monji, an 11-year-old boy who loses his mother, and sets out to rescue him.

Director Timo Tjahjanto (V/H/S/2, Killers and The ABCs of Death), with his signature violent action style, blends martial arts and psychological drama, creating an epic coming-of-age narrative.

Could The Shadow Strays get a sequel on Netflix?

So far, there hasn’t been an official announcement regarding a sequel to The Shadow Strays on Netflix. However, the movie‘s open-ended conclusion, which combines martial arts elements, hints at the possibility of a continuation.

Directed by Timo Tjahjanto and starring Aurora Ribero, the film was praised for its intense action and the complexity of its characters, especially “13”, the young assassin who grapples with deep trauma.

This could offer more ground to explore in future installments. Tjahjanto, known for his ultraviolent style in films like “The Night Comes for Us”, has left open possibilities in previous projects, as he did with this latest one.

Although The Night Comes for Us never received its anticipated sequel, the ending of The Shadow Strays suggests that there could be more stories to tell, depending on the film’s success and Netflix’s interest in continuing the project.

Timo Tjahjanto talked about The Shadow Strays

The talented Indonesian director, Timo Tjahjanto, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about his new film on Netflix. Despite the brutal nature of the story, he describes it as a coming-of-age film in disguise.

In the end, it’s about this character learning the hardest lesson in life — that things are not always in your control. Even when you try to make things better, they might just get worse“, he confessed.

On the other hand, he also spoke about the lead star of the thriller, the talented 20-year-old Aurora Ribero, whom he cast after seeing her in the youth film “Like & Share”. Regarding her, he stated:

When it comes to action, anybody who has the will and spirit to train can eventually execute it — but you don’t see this humanity in every performer. Aurora has a certain innocence in her eyes that’s one in a million“.
