The “Amityville” film franchise remains one of the most recognizable names in horror. It began in 1979 with “The Amityville Horror” and was followed by eight official sequels, along with a flood of independent picture loosely inspired by the chilling real-life case of Ronald DeFeo Jr. The original crime and the supposed haunting that followed captured the attention of everyone from national media outlets to famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
The most recent entry in the official series was the 2005 remake of “The Amityville Horror,” starring Ryan Reynolds as the father driven to madness. Now, two decades later, the franchise is set to return once more—a new “Amityville” film is officially in development.
Details So Far on the New Amityville Project
According to Deadline, “Amityville” will be the title of the next movie inspired by the infamous true-crime story that helped shape the foundation of modern horror. The project is in capable hands. Joseph and Vanessa Winter, who gained recognition for writing, directing, producing, and editing the 2022 film “Deadstream,” are set to lead the project. They will work with their own original script, though specific details about the plot have not yet been revealed.
Two of the most respected companies in contemporary horror are involved in bringing the tale to life again. BoulderLight Pictures, the studio behind “Barbarian,” “Companion,” and the upcoming “Weapons,” is one of the driving forces behind the new project. “Weapons” has already generated significant buzz and is being called one of the most anticipated horror films of the year, even ahead of its release.
Also producing is Divide/Conquer, known for titles such as “Cam,” “M3GAN,” and the early 2025 hit “Heart Eyes.” Reports suggest that producers are aiming to begin filming before the end of 2025. If everything moves forward on schedule, it may not be long before audiences are once again drawn back to the chilling legacy of Amityville.
