James Handy Built a Career as One of Hollywood’s Most Reliable Character Actors

While he rarely occupied center stage, Handy became one of those recognizable faces audiences encountered across decades of television and film. His extensive résumé included appearances in acclaimed movies such as “The Verdict,” “Arachnophobia,” “Jumanji,” “Unbreakable,” “Logan,” and, most recently, “Top Gun: Maverick.” His ability to seamlessly move between drama, thriller, comedy, and action projects made him a steady presence in the industry for nearly 50 years.

Television viewers were equally familiar with his work. Handy accumulated dozens of guest appearances throughout his career, appearing on series including “Law & Order,” “ER,” “The X-Files,” “Quantum Leap,” “Criminal Minds,” “Castle,” and “The West Wing.” He also held recurring roles on “Alias,” where he portrayed Arthur Devlin, and “Profiler,” in which he played Lou Handleman.

Authorities say officers responded to a call Wednesday morning in Tarzana, where Handy was discovered unconscious in the front yard of a residence after suffering stab wounds to the chest. Emergency personnel transported him to a nearby hospital, but he was later pronounced dead. Investigators identified 44-year-old Michael Gledhill as the suspect in the case. Police stated that Gledhill lived at the residence with his mother, who was reported to be Handy’s girlfriend.
