Fox is doubling down on one of animation’s most unpredictable characters, giving the diabolically witty baby of "Family Guy" a show of his own.

According to Variety, the network has ordered a “Family Guy” spinoff titled “Stewie,” granting the project an early two season commitment and aiming for a premiere during the 2027 to 2028 broadcast season.

A New Chapter for the ‘Family Guy’ Universe

Since its debut in 1999, “Family Guy” has built an enduring presence in television animation, balancing absurdist humor with relentless pop culture satire. Created by Seth MacFarlane, the series follows the chaotic Griffin family in the fictional Rhode Island town of Quahog, with jokes frequently delivered through rapid fire cutaways and boundary pushing gags. Over the decades, the show has become a cornerstone of Fox’s animated lineup.

The new project places the spotlight on one of the title’s most distinctive creations: Stewie Griffin. Introduced as a hyper articulate infant with grandiose ambitions, Stewie began the series as a pint sized supervillain obsessed with ending the life of his mother, Lois, and achieving world domination. Over time, the character evolved into a more self aware and emotionally complex figure, often paired with the family’s martini loving dog Brian in some of the show’s most memorable storylines.

Fox’s decision to greenlight the spinoff reflects both the character’s popularity and the broader durability of the franchise. The original series has survived cancellations, schedule shuffles and industry upheaval since its launch after Super Bowl XXXIII. Its revival in 2005 after strong DVD sales and late night reruns became one of television’s most unusual comeback stories.

The network has already demonstrated a willingness to expand the brand before. The earlier spinoff “The Cleveland Show” ran from 2009 to 2013, centering on neighbor Cleveland Brown and briefly extending the animated universe beyond Quahog. The upcoming “Stewie” series suggests Fox sees room for further experimentation within the franchise.

For now, details about the premise and creative team remain under wraps. But with a two season order already in place and a target debut still a couple of years away, the project signals that Fox is planning the next phase of the “Family Guy” ecosystem well ahead of the show’s approaching three decade milestone.
