Both actors were attached to an early version of “Ford v Ferrari,” which at the time was being developed by Joseph Kosinski—the same director who now helms “F1.” The project was titled “Go Like Hell” and would have seen Cruise as Carroll Shelby and Pitt as Ken Miles. According to Kosinski, speaking at the Directors on Directing panel at Comic-Con 2020, the two stars even participated in a table read. The idea was ultimately canceled because the budget proved too expensive to move forward.



Eventually, the picture evolved into “Ford v Ferrari,” which was directed by James Mangold and starred Matt Damon and Christian Bale. If the original version had gone ahead, it would have marked the long-awaited second collaboration between Cruise and Pitt, and possibly signaled a new chapter for the two actors.

“Unfortunately, it’s a spending of tens of millions of dollars that has veered off both the right and wrong paths. What people don’t know is that, first of all, we shot in places with discounts, England has a big discount, much of Europe has discounts, and also Abu Dhabi. 



All of this reduces the budget. Additionally, we have raised more money for our car [through sponsorships] than some Formula 1 teams. Taking all that into account, the figure is much lower than people might think… We can’t give a figure because it’s Apple’s money and they can talk about it. But what I think can be said is that it’s significantly lower than what has been reported“.

Pitt revealed to Variety that the film will follow Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a Formula One driver who raced in the 1990s, has a horrible crash, forcing him to retire from the sport. However, a Formula One team owner and friend (Bardem) contacts Hayes and asks him to come out of retirement to mentor rookie prodigy Joshua Pearce (Idris) on the Apex Grand Prix team (APXGP).
