Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece “One Hundred Years of Solitude” (Cien Años de Soledad) is being brought to the screen thanks to Netflix. The emblematic novel, published in 1967, has been long considered a work impossible to adapt to another format, due to its complexity and extensiveness.

Moreover, García Márquez, or Gabo, as the Nobel prize-winning author was known, was against the idea of adapting the novel, as he always thought that his vision wouldn’t be honored if the book was turned into a movie. Especially one in English.

However, his son Rodrigo García, known for his work as filmmaker, has teamed up with Netflix to try to do justice to one of the greatest works in literature in a 16-episode series in Spanish. And the streamer has finally released the first teaser of the upcoming show, which was filmed in Colombia. Here’s all you need to know.

What is ‘One Hundred Year of Solitude’ about?

The book (and the series) follows several generations of the Buendía lineage, starting with cousins José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán, who get married against the will of their parents and then embark on a journey which ends in the foundation of Macondo, an utopian village.

García Márquez was known for blending elements of reality and fantasy, in a genre known as magic realism. So, we expect the same for the series, in which each member of the family will be tormented by forbidden and impossible love, war and madness.
