Netflix has been updating both its catalog and its top 10 most-watched movies on the platform, and since early January, there’s a particular title that has quickly and effectively captivated users. It’s a survival thriller based on one of the most shocking real-life cases in Latin America.

This Spanish-language production has become an international phenomenon, and J.A. Bayona was the director in charge. Within just a few days of its release, it gained recognition as the best adaptation of the Andes Plane Crash, thanks to the level of realistic details, ranging from makeup to the script.

The story depicts the event from start to finish and everything the survivors had to endure after being stranded. The lead performances, such as Enzo Vogrincic, who portrays Numa Turcatti, were particularly notable, as he is the character narrating the events of the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 accident.

This means it is the most-watched in various countries, not just the United States. The film directed by Bayona takes us back to October 13, 1972, where Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, chartered to transport a rugby team to Chile, crashes into a glacier in the heart of the Andes.

The director admitted that he based his work on the book “La Sociedad de la Nieve” by Pablo Vierci, in which there is a passage revealing the reason why J.A. chose to tell the story from the perspective of Numa Turcatti, portrayed by Enzo Vogrincic. Many have even labeled him as a silent hero and even an angel of the tragedy.

Why is Society of the Snow told from Numa Turcatti’s perspective?

The Spanish filmmaker confessed on several occasions and interviews that the film, which premiered on Netflix, seeks to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. For this reason, the story is told through the character of Numa, who had a unique and beloved personality.

His actions before his death, being the last victim before the rescue, were noble and respected by all his companions. That’s why Bayona chose to feature him as the protagonist, out of respect for all the voices of those who did not make it and to commemorate him as an eternal hero.

Fernando ‘Nando’ Parrado, one of the survivors, also wrote a book (Miracle in the Andes) where he talks about his memories of the tragedy and the role Numa had played back then. There, he confesses that Numa had been responsible for leading them out of the mountains and implies that they had formed a special bond, stating:

“Although most of us didn’t know him before the accident, he quickly earned the friendship and admiration of all the survivors. Numa made his presence felt through silent heroic acts: no one fought as much for us to survive, no one inspired as much hope, and no one showed as much compassion for those who suffered the most“.
