“Unfrosted,” starring Jerry Seinfeld, has become the number one movie on Netflix US, according to FlixPatrol. The specialized website reports that the film has reached the top, surpassing other new additions such as “The Roast of Tom Brady” and “Katt Williams: Woke Foke,” which are second and third respectively for Week 19 of 2024.

The comedy is loosely inspired by the real-life story of the creation of the famous Pop-Tarts. The film is set in Michigan in 1963, following the competition between Kellogg’s and Post to create a new cereal that wouldn’t need milk or be in a bowl.

Apart from Seinfeld, “Unfrosted” has a star-studded cast that includes Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, and Jim Gaffigan. No wonder it has become not only the most watched movie in the US, but also worldwide. However, there are even more cameos in the film.

Who is behind ‘Unfrosted’?

Seinfield not only stars and directs the movie, but he also wrote the screenplay alongside Spike Feresten (Bee Movie), Andy Robin (Live Free or Die) and Barry Marder (Welcome to Hollywood). He also co-produced with Feresten and Beau Bauman.

What are the critics saying about ‘Unfrosted’?

The movie might be the most watched on Netflix, but critics didn’t like it. Like, at all. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 42% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some of the harshest headlines include: “Jerry Seinfeld’s ‘Unfrosted’ is one of the decade’s worst movies” (Chicago Sun Times), “Jerry Seinfeld’s Painfully Stale Pop-Tarts Comedy Never Heats Up” (IndieWire) and “Seinfeld’s Netflix Pop-Tart movie Unfrosted embarrasses everyone” (Polygon).

However, there are some forgiving reviews, such as The Hollywood Reporter, which call it “lightweight but satisfying pop-tarts origin story.” Or The New York Times: “As junk food goes, “Unfrosted” is delightful with a sprinkle of morbidity.”
