“Dumb Money,” a biographical comedy–drama starring Paul Dano, is currently the sixth most-watched movie on Netflix in the US, according to the specialized website FlixPatrol. The film, which was originally released in 2023, has achieved this with only one day on the platform.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the movie centers around the GameStop short squeeze in 2021 and its impact on the financial world. The script is based on the 2021 book “The Antisocial Network” by Ben Mezrich.

Dumb Money, a comedy that is making waves on Netflix
The movie tracks the journey of vlogger Keith Gill (played by Dano), who invests his entire life savings in GameStop stock and posts about it, encouraging people to do the same. What starts as a stock tip transforms into a widespread movement, bringing wealth to many, until the billionaires decide to fight back.
It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and received rave reviews by critics. While the movie isn’t completely faithful to the real-life events (there’s always something to leave out), the film was entertaining with great performances.

Another positive aspect of the film is the soundtrack, which features well known songs such as “WAP” by Cardi B or “Savage” by Jodie Summers. However, its good reputation didn’t translate to box office sales. The film, which cost $30 million to produce, only grossed $20 million during its run.
