Months of industry chatter and fan speculation have finally given way to confirmation that “KPop Demon Hunters” will continue its story.
According to Tudum, Netflix and Sony have officially announced that a sequel to the breakout animated film is now in development, with the original creative team returning to guide the next installment.

The upcoming sequel will reunite directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, who are also writing the new chapter. Their return keeps the project anchored to the partnership that shaped the original picture, a high energy mix of K-pop spectacle and supernatural action that unexpectedly became one of Netflix’s most talked about animated hits.

Kang made it clear that the story is far from finished. “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” she said, adding that there is still much more to explore in the universe they created. “This is only the beginning.”
Appelhans also suggested the creative team sees the sequel as an opportunity to push the characters further. “These characters are like family to us,” he said, explaining that the creators are eager to continue their journeys and challenge them in new ways while experimenting with how music, animation, and narrative blend together.
The sequel is reportedly targeting a 2029 release and will mark the first project under Kang and Appelhans’ new exclusive multi year deal with Netflix to develop animated films. The original “KPop Demon Hunters,” produced alongside Sony Pictures Animation, debuted in June 2025 and went on to surpass 500 million views on the platform.
Netflix leadership has framed the picture’s success as something that extended far beyond streaming numbers. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said the movie sparked a global fandom that crossed cultural and generational lines, while film chief Dan Lin pointed to the creative gamble behind the project. “There’s so much more story to tell,” Lin said, adding that the company is eager to bring more of the HUNTR/X world to audiences around the world.
