‘Toy Story 5’ Nearly Breaks Pixar’s Biggest Box Office Record

Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5" has arrived in theaters with the kind of opening that places it among the biggest animated releases ever.

According to Deadline, the film earned an estimated $71 million on its first day, including preview screenings, putting it within striking distance of a record that has stood since 2018. The strong debut also positions the sequel for what could become the franchise’s best domestic opening weekend and one of the largest launches of 2026.

A Massive Opening Puts ‘Toy Story 5’ in Rare Company

The picture’s estimated $71 million opening day total leaves it just shy of the animated first-day record established by “Incredibles 2,” which opened to $71.2 million including previews. While the difference is minimal, the result still places “Toy Story 5” among the strongest animated launches in box office history and marks the biggest first day for any film since “Deadpool & Wolverine” debuted in 2024.

Industry projections currently point to a domestic opening weekend between $160 million and $170 million. If those estimates hold, “Toy Story 5” will deliver the biggest domestic debut of the year so far and set a new opening weekend record for the long-running Pixar franchise. It would also rank as the second largest three-day opening ever for an animated movie, trailing only “Incredibles 2.”

The film’s momentum extends beyond North America. Since its international rollout began earlier in the week, “Toy Story 5” has accumulated roughly $129.3 million worldwide, giving Disney and Pixar another major theatrical success at a time when established family franchises continue to prove their value at the global box office.

Directed by Andrew Stanton, the fifth installment shifts much of the spotlight to Jessie as she, Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of Bonnie’s toys face a new challenge: competing with a tablet called Lilypad that becomes Bonnie’s favorite source of entertainment. The story explores the growing role of technology in children’s lives while revisiting many of the beloved characters that helped make the series one of Pixar’s defining franchises.

Audience response appears to be helping fuel the picture’s strong commercial performance. “Toy Story 5” received an A CinemaScore from opening-day moviegoers, continuing the franchise’s long track record of positive audience reactions. With Father’s Day weekend expected to provide an additional boost, all eyes are now on whether the sequel can maintain its momentum and secure a place among the highest grossing animated openings ever.
