The first extended footage of “Digger” has arrived, placing Tom Cruise at the center of one of the most awaited reveals of CinemaCon. According to Deadline, the presentation from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures offered a clearer look at the long-guarded project, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, while hinting at a performance that departs sharply from Cruise’s recent screen persona.

A Transformative Turn Anchors Iñárritu’s Dark Satire

The footage introduces Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a powerful industrialist whose actions trigger a global environmental crisis. The character is depicted as erratic and self-mythologizing, oscillating between grand declarations and moments of volatility as he attempts to frame himself as humanity’s only solution to the catastrophe he set in motion.

The tonal balance leans into absurdity, with scenes that juxtapose personal insecurity and global consequence, signaling a satirical approach consistent with Iñárritu’s stated themes of control and delusion.

Visually and physically, the role marks a departure for Cruise. Deadline and other news sites that had the chance to watch the trailer reported that the actor appears with a markedly altered look, adopting exaggerated mannerisms and a shifting accent that underscore the character’s instability.

The footage highlights moments of dark humor alongside escalating stakes, including warnings from government officials, with the U.S. president, played by John Goodman, outlining the scale of the unfolding disaster and its potential global impact.

The collaboration itself has been years in the making. Cruise noted that early conversations with Iñárritu began several years ago, culminating in a project he described as creatively ambitious and tonally distinct from his recent work. For Iñárritu, the picture represents a return to English-language filmmaking following “The Revenant,” with a focus on character-driven storytelling framed within a large-scale premise.

Iñárritu emphasized the demands of the role, describing Cruise’s performance as a different kind of risk compared to the physical feats that have defined much of his career. He pointed to the psychological complexity of the character and the challenge of sustaining its extremes, framing the performance as one of the most demanding of the actor’s career.

Set for release on October 2, Digger features an ensemble that includes Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Riz Ahmed, among others. With its blend of satire, scale, and a lead performance positioned as a significant departure, the film enters the conversation early as a potential contender in the upcoming awards season.
