“The Passion of the Christ” is one of the most important films in the history of cinema, not only for being nominated for three Oscars but also for the cultural and religious impact it has had worldwide.
Mel Gibson‘s masterpiece revived interest in religious cinema and in the portrayals of the life of Jesus, simultaneously boosting tourism to sacred sites and fostering dialogue on themes of faith and sacrifice.
Despite the controversies it generated regarding its portrayal of Jews, which some interpreted as a perpetuation of antisemitic stereotypes, the director defended his work as a faithful interpretation of biblical texts.
How to watch The Passion of the Christ in the US
The Passion of the Christ premiered in 2004 and has since become a cult classic. Now that its highly anticipated sequel has been announced, 20 years later, it’s time to hit play. It is currently available in the Prime Video catalog.
The period drama portrays the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, on the day of his crucifixion in Jerusalem. The sequel has been titled “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection – Chapter I“, giving us an idea of the plot.
It will focus on the events that occurred over three days between the crucifixion and the resurrection, when Jesus Christ descended to the Bosom of Abraham to preach and resurrect the saints of the Old Testament.
The narrative structure of the new one is expected to be non-linear, encompassing events from the past, present and future, which promises a more ambitious and mystical approach. Therefore, it will be just as epic as the first.
