Saoirse Ronan is among some of the most impressive young talents in Hollywood. At 30 years old, the Irish actress has been nominated four times at the Oscars, as well as five times at the BAFTAs. And she is expected to return to the awards conversation with one of her upcoming films: The Outrun.
The drama was helmed by Nora Fingscheidt, a German director that is known for titles such as The Unforgivable (2021), Without This World (2017) and System Crasher (2019). The film is based on the eponymous book by Amy Liptrot.

The author also serves as a co-screenwriter alongside the director and Daisy Lewis (Be Good, Doctor Who, and Downton Abbey). Who else is in the cast of ‘The Outrun’?
The rest of the cast also includes Saskia Reeves, Lauren Lyle, Stephen Dillane, and Izuka Hoyle. However, most of the film is centered around Ronan’s character. And, after the movie’s premiere at 2024 Sundance, critics have praised her performance, predicting that it will be one of the strongest of the season.
What has the director of ‘The Outrun’ said?
In an interview with The List, Fingscheidt said that she felt that Ronan being the lead of the film made it “very promising,” as “Not everybody can pull it off to have enough presence to hold a film. That is half the film, just herself on the remote island.”
The movie was filmed in the remote Orkney Islands, and production had to do four trips in different seasons to get everything they needed. “We knew that nature would be its own character in the film. It’s a film about a woman and a place, and so we had to adapt to nature’s rules,” she told the outlet.
Another aspect of the film is that it is mostly about the interiority of the character, and her connection to her hometown, as well as about addiction. “What we were trying to bring across with the film is how difficult it is to be sober,” said Fingscheidt. “It’s still one day at a time, and you really have to learn to find joy in life,” she added.
