After a quiet stretch following its 2024 announcement, “The Matrix 5” is officially moving forward. In a recent interview with ScreenRant conducted around the release of “Project Hail Mary,” writer and director Drew Goddard reassured fans that the next installment in the groundbreaking sci fi saga is very much alive.

What Drew Goddard’s Update Means for the Franchise

“Still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.” With that update to ScreenRant, Drew Goddard confirmed that the next chapter of the “Matrix” universe is actively being written, signaling real forward movement after months of limited public information.

The significance of that progress becomes clearer when viewed against the franchise’s history. For years, continuation seemed improbable. The original trilogy was conceived as a closed arc, and those involved made it known at the time that there were no ambitions to push beyond “The Matrix Revolutions.” More than a decade later, the creative reluctance remained visible, when returning to the “Matrix” world was framed as an unappealing prospect in an industry dominated by sequels.

Even as skepticism surrounded future installments, some of the franchise’s most recognizable faces expressed conditional openness. Most importantly, Keanu Reeves indicated he would consider reprising his role if the Wachowskis were meaningfully involved. That possibility became reality in 2019 in 2019 with the announcement that Lana Wachowski would direct “The Matrix Resurrections,” reactivating a property many assumed had reached its endpoint.

After “Resurrections debuted,” producer James McTeigue suggested there was no immediate blueprint for further sequels, though the picture’s conclusion left narrative space to expand. The landscape changed again in April 2024, when Warner Bros. announced that Goddard would write and direct a new installment. It will mark the first entry not directed by either Wachowski sister, though Lana remains attached as executive producer, underscoring that the franchise is entering a distinct new phase rather than simply repeating its past.
