“The Conjuring: Last Rites” marks the ninth chapter in one of the most successful horror franchises of all time, bringing Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga back as renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Directed by Michael Chaves and based on the real-life Smurl haunting, the film dives deep into a chilling new case that intertwines family tragedy, demonic forces, and the Warrens’ personal struggles.

Released in the United States on September 5, the picture has already sparked intense conversations among fans and critics alike, receiving a mix of positive and mixed reviews. Audiences have praised its emotional stakes and spine-chilling sequences, and longtime fans of the franchise have celebrated the return of the Warrens to center stage. And beyond its critical reception, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” has made headlines for another reason — its historic performance at the global box office.

‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Has Biggest Horror Opening Ever

According to Variety, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” has stormed the box office with a record-breaking $194 million worldwide debut, making it the biggest global opening ever for a horror film. The new installment exceeded expectations, soaring past early estimates of $187 million and dethroning the previous record-holder, 2017’s “It,” which launched with $190 million.

A significant portion of that success came from international markets, where the picture earned $110 million — the strongest overseas opening ever for a horror release. This achievement pushes past the milestone set by “It: Chapter Two” in 2019, which brought in $92 million internationally. On the domestic side, “Last Rites” secured $84 million during its first weekend, ranking as the third-biggest U.S. horror debut, just behind the two “It” movies.

The film’s performance also cements Warner Bros.’ dominance in the genre, as the studio now holds the top three spots for the highest domestic and global openings in horror history. With its ambitious storyline and familiar franchise faces, “The Conjuring” universe proves it still has the power to captivate audiences around the world.
