“Hamnet” is the upcoming biographical drama that will bring four of the most talented stars in contemporary industry to the big screen: Jessie Buckley (Men), Paul Mescal (Gladiator II), Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn (Kinds of Kindness).
The direction will be handled by Chloé Zhao, known for other mega-successful productions such as the Marvel film Eternals with Barry Keoghan, the Oscar-winning Nomadland with Frances McDormand and the classic The Rider.
The story follows two major historical figures, Agnes and William Shakespeare, but focuses on how the writer’s wife transcends her struggle and pain in overcoming the loss of their only child.
When could Hamnet be released?
“Hamnet” is still in production, and the main actors have been seen filming multiple scenes in period costumes. It has not been officially confirmed when it will be released, but it is estimated to be early 2025.
The movie is a fictional reimagining of the life of the Shakespeare’s family, focusing on his daughter Hamnet, who died at a young age. The plot explores the family’s grief and how it influenced the writer’s work.

The upcoming drama, featuring A-list stars, like the book by Maggie O’Farrell (on which the project is based), focuses on the emotional impact and family dynamics, addressing themes of mourning, love and legacy.
Paul Mescal will bring William Shakespeare to life, while Jessie Buckley plays Agnes Shakespeare. As of August 2024, the characters portrayed by Joe Alwyn and Emily Watson have not been revealed.
