‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Turns 12: Chris Pratt Stole His Star-Lord Costume for a Heartwarming Reason

"Guardians of the Galaxy" celebrates its 12th anniversary this year as one of Marvel Studios' most influential releases, introducing audiences to an unlikely team of heroes led by Chris Pratt's Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord.

According to IMDb Trivia, Pratt kept pieces of his Star-Lord costume after filming with a very specific goal in mind: using them to visit children in hospitals if the movie connected with young fans. The picture premiered in July 2014 before arriving in U.S. theaters on August 1, launching a franchise that would grow into one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest success stories.

Chris Pratt Wanted Star-Lord to Inspire Fans Beyond the Screen

Pratt admitted in a 2014 interview that he intentionally held onto Star-Lord’s signature jacket after production wrapped. Rather than keeping it as a personal souvenir, he wanted to have the costume ready in case the film became a success and children in hospitals wished to meet the character in person.

He soon followed through on that plan. After the movie’s release, Pratt appeared in costume during visits to facilities including Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Christopher’s Haven in Boston, meeting patients as Star-Lord instead of simply attending as himself.

Released in 2014, “Guardians of the Galaxy” transformed a relatively obscure Marvel property into a global phenomenon. Directed by James Gunn, the film introduced Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot to the MCU and went on to earn more than $773 million worldwide, paving the way for two sequels and cementing the team as one of Marvel’s most beloved franchises.

The picture also marked a turning point for Pratt. Before leading Marvel’s cosmic adventure, he was best known for comedic roles, particularly on “Parks and Recreation.” The success of Star-Lord established him as a leading action star and opened the door to franchises including “Jurassic World” and later Marvel appearances.
