Alicia Silverstone Is Officially Returning as Cher in a New ‘Clueless’ Series

According to Variety, Paramount+ has officially ordered a sequel series to "Clueless," with Alicia Silverstone returning as Cher Horowitz more than three decades after the beloved 1995 film became a pop culture phenomenon.

The project, which had previously been in development at Peacock before being shelved, has now received a six-episode order and is expected to begin production in Los Angeles in 2027.

Alicia Silverstone Returns to Cher Horowitz for a New Chapter

Rather than revisiting Cher’s teenage years, the upcoming series moves the story into the present day. The new version follows Cher as a successful businesswoman and mother whose confidence is tested when her own daughter reaches high school. The official premise suggests that raising a teenager forces Cher to confront unfamiliar challenges, leaving her feeling clueless once again despite everything she has accomplished.

The move to Paramount+ also reunites the franchise with the studio behind the original film. After the project stalled at Peacock earlier this year, Paramount+ stepped in to continue development, keeping the property within Paramount’s own television division. The show will be produced by CBS Studios, while Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the 1995 picture, returns as an executive producer alongside Silverstone and original producer Robert Lawrence.

The original “Clueless” became one of the defining teen comedies of the 1990s. Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Emma,” the title introduced audiences to Cher Horowitz, a fashionable and well-meaning Beverly Hills teenager navigating friendships, romance, and high school social life. Alongside Silverstone, the cast featured Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya. In recent years, the movie’s cultural legacy was further recognized when it was added to the United States National Film Registry.

Although “Clueless” previously expanded into a television series that aired from 1996 to 1999, Silverstone did not reprise her role at the time because of other professional commitments. Rachel Blanchard instead portrayed Cher across the show’s three-season run, while several supporting actors from the picture, including Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, and Elisa Donovan, returned as their original characters. The new Paramount+ title marks the first time Silverstone has stepped back into Cher’s shoes for a television project.
