For any actor seeking to make a lasting impression in the film industry, starring in “Gladiator II” would be an immediate “yes.” However, this wasn’t the case for Barry Keoghan, who withdrew from negotiations to participate in Ridley Scott’s movie in May 2023.
Furthermore, it was revealed by Variety at that time that Keoghan was set to play Emperor Geta, the villain of the sequel. So, for him to turn down this unparalleled offer, there must have been a much greater opportunity on the other side.
One might envision a major blockbuster or a title with a Hollywood iconic director, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, it’s a small yet intricate project that was unveiled at Cannes a few days ago, receiving a standing ovation for 7 minutes.
All about ‘Bird’, the film that led Barry Keoghan to decline ‘Gladiator II’
In a recent interview with IndieWire, in the context of the premiere of “The Bird” at Cannes, Barry Keoghan discussed his decision to exit “Gladiator II” and instead choose the film by Andrea Arnold.

“Um, conflicts, schedule conflicts. I am a massive fan of Gladiator and a massive fan of that cast. It’s a shame you can’t do both. But that happens in this game. You can’t do both.”
What is so exciting for Keoghan about this just-premiered title, which he called “the most artistic experience ever”? Well, firstly, it is helmed by Arnold, known for crafting captivating social realism stories and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Short with her 2005 film “Wasp”.
“Bird” follows Bailey, a 12-year-old girl who lives with her brother Hunter and their father Bug, who has taken care of their upbringing. Bailey and her family’s life is marked by routine and Bug’s lack of time for his children, leading the youngsters to make their own decisions.
It doesn’t have a release date, and it’s not even known if it will hit theaters worldwide. But if it does, it’s probable that it will be released between August or September, like all the films premiered in Cannes that aim to compete for the Oscars.
