According to Variety, “Hoppers” will begin streaming on Disney+ on June 3, following a strong theatrical run that turned the film into one of the studio’s most commercially successful non sequel releases of the decade.
‘Hoppers’ Became One of Pixar’s Biggest Original Success Stories
Directed by Daniel Chong, the filmmaker behind “We Bare Bears,” “Hoppers” arrived in theaters in March and quickly exceeded expectations at the global box office. The picture earned $386 million worldwide against a reported $150 million production budget, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 2026 so far and Pixar’s strongest opening for an original movie since “Coco.”
The story centers on Mabel Tanaka, a college student obsessed with protecting a forest habitat threatened by urban development. After discovering experimental technology that allows humans to transfer their consciousness into robotic animals, Mabel enters the animal world as a robotic beaver and becomes entangled in a growing conflict between humans and wildlife. What begins as an environmental mission gradually turns into a political struggle involving rival animal factions, corrupt city leadership, and escalating chaos across the ecosystem.
Piper Curda leads the voice cast as Mabel alongside Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, Dave Franco, and Meryl Streep, who voices the feared Insect Queen. The hit also drew attention for its unusual tonal mix, blending family comedy with science fiction satire, environmental themes, and spy thriller elements. Chong previously cited nature documentaries and titles like “Avatar” as inspirations during development.
The project spent roughly six years in development at Pixar. Jesse Andrews co-wrote the screenplay, while Mark Mothersbaugh composed the score and SZA contributed the original end credits song “Save the Day.” Marketing for the film became unexpectedly viral thanks to Tom Lizard, a minor character who exploded online through memes and promotional appearances tied to the release.
Hoppers will arrive on Disney+ one day after its physical home release rollout begins. The picture is also scheduled to release on Ultra HD Blu ray, Blu ray, and DVD on June 2.
