While musical theater continually brings new and brilliant stories to the stage, Broadway has struggled to let go of “The Phantom of the Opera”. The 1986 musical, created by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is considered one of the most influential cultural phenomena of all time and has secured its place in history.

The world mourned when its creator announced that the final curtain would fall on April 16, 2023. The haunting love story, gothic atmosphere, and iconic characters took their last bow. While productions like the one in London’s West End continue to thrive, it was undeniably emotional to see the original Broadway production say goodbye.

Now, it appears we’ll see the story of Christine Daaé and the Phantom once more, as Deadline reports that a new movie adaptation is in the works. Check all that is known so far about it!

What sets this version apart is its young adult focus, and it will be directed by none other than Kenny Ortega, the creative force behind Disney’s beloved “High School Musical” and “Descendants” franchises.

The picture, tentatively titled “Phantom,” is envisioned as the start of a potential franchise, with plans for multiple installments. The screenplay is reportedly being penned by Giovanni M. Porta, known for writing the 2023 holiday romance “At Midnight”.

As for the release date, the project is still in its early stages, so it’s likely we’ll have to wait until at least the second half of 2025 for further details. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available!
