Disney has set a release date for “Lilo and Stitch 2,” continuing the studio’s push to build on one of its most commercially successful hybrid hits of recent years. According to Variety, the sequel is now slated to arrive in theaters on May 26, 2028, positioning it squarely in a high-stakes holiday corridor.

A Billion-Dollar Bet Gets a Sequel

The decision to fast-track a follow-up comes as little surprise given the performance of 2025’s “Lilo and Stitch,” which crossed the billion-dollar mark globally and became the highest-grossing live-action and animated hybrid film to date. That kind of box office dominance tends to settle internal debates quickly, especially for a studio increasingly reliant on known intellectual property.

Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the first picture reintroduced audiences to the Hawaiian-set story of a lonely girl and a genetically engineered alien, blending CGI spectacle with a more grounded emotional core. While critics were divided, audiences responded strongly, helping propel the movie into must-follow-up territory.

The sequel is expected to continue that trajectory, with Chris Sanders, the original creator of Stitch, returning as a writer after lending his voice to the character in the 2025 title.

Scheduling the film over Memorial Day weekend is a strategic move. The late-May frame has become one of the industry’s most reliable launchpads for four-quadrant blockbusters, offering a long runway into the summer season. It also mirrors the release pattern of the 2025 installment, which benefited from strong holiday momentum.

For Disney, the message is clear. In an era where original concepts face increasing risk, “Lilo and Stitch 2” represents a rare combination of brand familiarity and proven audience appeal. The studio is not just revisiting a beloved property, it is doubling down on one of its most bankable modern franchises.
