While he is now a well-known name in television, his life changed completely in 2009 when he landed the lead role of Stefan Salvatore on The Vampire Diaries. Here is a look at how that one audition turned a working actor into an international TV star.

However, that lifestyle carried a lethal cost. While many rock icons fell to their vices, Slash literally crossed over to the other side—and made it back.

<h2>September 1992: The Night in San Francisco</h2>



In September 1992, Guns N’ Roses was in the middle of a massive, stadium-packing co-headlining tour with Metallica. The band was staying at a hotel in San Francisco ahead of a scheduled concert across the bay in Oakland.



According to IMDb trivia, following the show, Slash returned to his hotel room, where a night of heavy partying quickly spiraled out of control. At roughly 5:00 AM, drug dealers arrived at his room with a potent supply of drugs. Slash consumed a heavy “speedball”—a notoriously deadly intravenous combination of heroin and cocaine.



Shortly after taking the dose, a disoriented Slash wandered out into the hotel hallway, attempting to find the elevator. He encountered a hotel maid, managed to ask for directions, and suddenly collapsed onto the carpet.



<h2>Eight Minutes Clinically Dead</h2>



The hotel maid immediately called 911. By the time emergency paramedics arrived on the scene, Slash was non-responsive and in total cardiac arrest.



For eight minutes, the iconic guitarist had no pulse and was clinically dead.



Using emergency chest compressions and a direct injection of adrenaline to his heart, paramedics managed to restart his pulse.



<h2>“A Huge Shock of Energy”: In Slash’s Own Words</h2>



Years later, Slash opened up about what it actually felt like to be brought back from the brink of death.



“I remember everything up to that moment,” Slash recalled in a radio interview. “And everything after that was just waking up with the paramedics, and I was still in the hotel hallway… There’s a thing that happens when paramedics wake you up out of death like that where it’s just this huge shock of energy and lights, voices, and pandemonium. It’s an unmistakable feeling.”



In true rockstar fashion, Slash was rushed to a local hospital, but he signed himself out against medical advice shortly after waking up. Just two days later, he was back on stage performing in front of tens of thousands of fans in Los Angeles.



<h2>The Wake-Up Call and Path to Sobriety</h2>



While the 1992 hallway incident was his most famous brush with mortality, years of touring and substance abuse eventually caught up with his body.



In 2001, at just 35 years old, Slash was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy—a severe form of congestive heart failure caused by long-term alcohol and drug stress. Doctors gave him a grim prognosis, but after undergoing surgery to have an internal defibrillator (ICD) implanted, his heart stabilized.



The health scares finally led to a permanent turning point. In 2006, Slash officially committed to total sobriety.



“I got sober in 2006,” Slash reflected. “First, you have to come to terms with the fact that you’re beyond repair… I wouldn’t be doing anything like what I have been doing for the last 13-plus years if I was still going like I was. I probably wouldn’t be here.”

After promoting Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” and preparing for the release of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the actor has confirmed that his next stop is the long-awaited Fred Astaire biopic.
