Sally and Gillian Owens are officially back. Nearly three decades after Practical Magic became a cult classic, Nicole Kidman has opened up in a new cover interview with UK Vogue about bringing the beloved witchy world back to life for this September’s highly anticipated sequel.
Shot in London, Practical Magic 2 resurrects the magical Owens family 28 years after the original 1998 film won over generations of moviegoers.
Fan Demand and the Ultimate Sisterly Chemistry
According to Kidman, returning to the world created by author Alice Hoffman wasn’t just a fun nostalgia trip—it was an overwhelming response to audience demand.
“It was the fans,” Kidman told UK Vogue. “It was an actual demand from people. They were like, ‘Do we get this? Can we please?'”
Getting the sequel off the ground meant reuniting with co-star Sandra Bullock. While Kidman describes herself as a “Why not?” person and Bullock as a “Why?” person, their legendary off-screen chemistry immediately clicked back into place on set.
“Nic and I are very different. But our differences create the most fabulous dynamic,” Bullock shared. “Nicole and I hadn’t seen each other for decades with the exception of a run-in on a red carpet. But somehow we seamlessly stepped right back into these two sisters’ shoes like no time had passed at all.”
New Cast Additions and Returning ’90s Fashion
Directed by Susanne Bier, the new chapter expands the Owens family tree, introducing Maisie Williams and Joey King as Sally’s (Bullock) now grown-up daughters.
Fans of the original film’s iconic late-’90s aesthetic are also in for a treat: Bullock revealed she personally preserved a key wardrobe piece from the original 1998 production and brought it to England for filming.
“I felt like I was carrying the Holy Grail when I brought it over to England for the shoot,” Bullock joked.
With a mix of heartwarming family mayhem, visceral peril, and deep sisterly solidarity, Practical Magic 2 hits theaters this September.
