Spider-Man: Brand New Day was almost a very different movie. While promoting the film, Tom Holland revealed that the first assembled cut left him, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon with a strong sense that something was off after studio feedback from test screenings led to significant editorial changes.
According to him, the early version reflected “what the people wanted to see“ rather than the story the creative team had originally set out to tell, forcing the filmmakers back into the editing room to rethink the final product.

Tom Holland hated an early cut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day because it abandoned the filmmakers’ original creative vision in favor of changes based almost entirely on test-screening feedback.
According to the actor, the first edited version reflected what preview audiences wanted rather than the story he, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, director Destin Daniel Cretton and the creative team believed they were making.
Speaking about the post-production process, Holland explained that the cast watched several different versions of the movie before the final cut was completed.
One of those versions stood out for the wrong reasons after the studio incorporated nearly every suggestion gathered from test screenings. The result, he admitted, was a film that no longer felt authentic to its creators’ intentions.
“They took all of the notes from [test screenings], and then they changed the movie… It totally didn’t work. It was what the people were asking for, but it wasn’t quite what we wanted as the creatives“.
Rather than accepting that version, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures continued refining the film. Holland said the team ultimately stepped back, reassessed the edit and restored much of what they originally envisioned.
The experience highlighted the challenge of balancing audience expectations with the instincts of the filmmakers, especially on one of the studio’s biggest franchises.
