For decades, Hollywood families have passed talent, ambition, and industry access from one generation to the next. While some celebrity children spend their careers living in the shadow of well known parents, others manage to build massive careers. Here, ten celebrities who became bigger stars than their already famous parents.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Being born to acclaimed actress Blythe Danner and producer director Bruce Paltrow certainly gave Gwyneth Paltrow a front row seat to Hollywood, but her career quickly grew beyond industry legacy status. In the late 1990s, she became one of the most recognizable actresses in the world thanks to films like “Shakespeare in Love,” which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress and cemented her as a leading star of the era.

Her fame only expanded from there. A new generation came to know her as Pepper Potts in the “Iron Man” franchise and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, while her lifestyle company Goop turned her into a constant source of headlines far outside the entertainment world. While her parents earned enormous respect within Hollywood circles, Gwyneth became something bigger: a globally recognized celebrity brand.

Ben Stiller

Comedy was practically part of Ben Stiller’s DNA. As the son of legendary performers Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, he grew up surrounded by television sets, sketch comedy, and some of the sharpest comic timing in show business. His parents became beloved entertainment figures through their long running partnership as Stiller and Meara, with Jerry later winning over sitcom audiences on “Seinfeld” and “The King of Queens.”

But Ben took that foundation and turned it into full scale Hollywood stardom. Throughout the 2000s, he became one of the defining comedy stars of the era with massive hits like “Meet the Parents,” “Zoolander,” “DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story,” and the “Night at the Museum” franchise. He also expanded beyond acting, earning praise as a director and producer on projects like “Tropic Thunder” and the acclaimed series “Severance.”

Jamie Lee Curtis

Few actors are born into a Hollywood family as legendary as Jamie Lee Curtis. Her father, Tony Curtis, was one of the defining leading men of the 1950s thanks to classics like “Some Like It Hot,” while her mother, Janet Leigh, became permanently linked to horror history through “Psycho.” For most performers, that kind of legacy would be impossible to escape.

Instead, Jamie Lee Curtis built one of her own. She became the face of the “Halloween” franchise and earned “scream queen” status before successfully branching into comedy, action, and prestige films with projects like “A Fish Called Wanda” and “True Lies.” Decades into her career, she reached yet another milestone by winning an Academy Award for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Chris Pine

Before Chris Pine became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable leading men, his father Robert Pine had already built a long and steady television career. Robert was best known for playing Sgt. Joseph Getraer on the hit series “CHiPs,” becoming a familiar face to audiences throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He remained a dependable character actor for decades, but mostly within television circles.

Chris Pine’s career reached an entirely different level of visibility. He stepped into blockbuster territory as Captain Kirk in the rebooted “Star Trek” films and later expanded his profile with major roles in “Wonder Woman” and “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.” With franchise success, global press attention, and years as a bankable studio lead, Chris became the far more internationally recognized name.

Miley Cyrus

Long before Miley Cyrus topped charts around the world, her father Billy Ray Cyrus became a country music sensation with the runaway success of “Achy Breaky Heart.” His fame in the early 1990s was enormous, especially within country music, and he remained a recognizable figure for decades thanks to television appearances and later collaborations like “Old Town Road.” But Miley’s career eventually expanded far beyond the level of celebrity her father reached.

After becoming a household name through “Hannah Montana,” Miley successfully reinvented herself into one of the defining pop stars of her generation. She moved from Disney Channel fame to chart dominating albums, sold out tours, and Grammy winning success, while constantly remaining at the center of pop culture conversation. That global reach also translated into enormous financial success, with estimates placing her fortune far ahead of her father’s.

Charlie Sheen

Growing up as the son of acclaimed actor Martin Sheen meant Charlie Sheen entered Hollywood with serious acting pedigree behind him. Martin built his reputation through powerful dramatic performances in classics like “Apocalypse Now” and later earned a whole new generation of fans through “The West Wing.” Within the industry, he became known as one of the most respected actors of his era.

Charlie Sheen, however, became something different entirely: a full blown pop culture phenomenon. After starring in films like “Platoon” and “Wall Street,” his fame exploded thanks to the sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” which turned him into one of television’s biggest and highest paid stars. His public image grew even larger through years of headline making controversies and media attention that extended far beyond acting.

Angelina Jolie

Hollywood success already ran in Angelina Jolie’s family long before she became a superstar. Her father, Jon Voight, earned enormous acclaim during the 1970s with performances in films like “Midnight Cowboy” and went on to win an Academy Award for “Coming Home.” He was widely respected as one of the strongest dramatic actors of his generation, but his fame largely remained tied to film audiences and Hollywood circles.

Angelina Jolie’s celebrity eventually became something much larger and more global. Blockbuster hits like “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” turned her into one of the biggest movie stars in the world, while her personal life kept her at the center of entertainment headlines for years. At the same time, her humanitarian work with the United Nations helped reshape her public image beyond Hollywood.

Matthew Perry

Before Matthew Perry became one of television’s most recognizable faces, his father John Bennett Perry had already built a successful career in entertainment. John worked steadily across television and film for decades and became especially memorable to audiences as the rugged sailor in a series of classic Old Spice commercials. He remained a familiar character actor with appearances in projects ranging from “Falcon Crest” to “Independence Day.”

Matthew Perry’s fame, however, exploded on a completely different scale once he was cast as Chandler Bing on “Friends.” His sarcastic delivery and comedic timing helped make Chandler one of the defining sitcom characters of the 1990s, turning Perry into an international television star. Even years after the series ended, Friends remained a cultural phenomenon watched by new generations around the world.

Gigi and Bella Hadid

Before her daughters became two of the most photographed models in the world, Yolanda Hadid had already built a successful career of her own. She worked as a model during the 1980s before finding a new level of visibility years later on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” While Yolanda was well known within reality television and fashion circles, her daughters eventually reached a far larger level of international fame.

Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid became defining faces of modern high fashion during the social media era. Gigi landed major campaigns, magazine covers, and runway appearances for some of the world’s biggest brands, while Bella earned industry acclaim for her striking runway presence and luxury fashion partnerships. Together, the sisters transformed from reality TV adjacent personalities into global supermodels with enormous online followings and worldwide name recognition.
