In an interview with ScreenRant conducted during press for the upcoming film adaptation of “Project Hail Mary,” Andy Weir revealed that he has already begun work on his next novel.

While the author is keeping the premise private for now, he made clear that readers can expect a new science fiction story rather than an expansion of one of his existing universes.

Andy Weir Confirms His Next Novel Is Already in the Works

For fans of “The Martian” and “Project Hail Mary,” the most notable takeaway from Weir’s latest interview is simple: the next mission is already underway. The author revealed that writing has begun on his upcoming project, offering only the barest glimpse into what lies ahead. “I’m working on my next book right now,” he said, noting that the project is still early enough that he prefers to keep specifics to himself.

What he did confirm is the genre. “It’s science fiction, of course,” Weir remarked, an answer unlikely to surprise readers who have followed his career. His reputation has been built on meticulously researched stories that translate complex science into page turning adventures.

The writer also clarified that the forthcoming novel will not revisit familiar territory. “It’s a new standalone story,” he explained, emphasizing that the book will introduce an entirely new narrative rather than revisiting characters or plotlines from earlier works. In fact, he was explicit about avoiding continuation. “It’s not a sequel to anything.”

The timing of the reveal comes as Weir’s work returns to the screen. The film adaptation of “Project Hail Mary,” starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, recently premiered in London and is set for release in the United States on March 20. The story follows Ryland Grace, a lone astronaut racing to solve a cosmic crisis after awakening aboard a distant spacecraft with no memory of how he arrived. As anticipation builds for that picture, Weir is already turning the page toward his next story, one that will once again venture into entirely new territory.
